i just bought a canon dslr for filming my gardening vlogs but the audio is honestly so bad it sounds like im underwater or something and you can hear the motor of the lens moving every time it focuses. sorry if this is a super basic question but i literally dont know anything about gear or what plugs into what. i see people with those fuzzy things on top of their cameras but i dont know if those are expensive or hard to set up.

i have about 80-100 dollars to spend and i want to buy something this week. does anyone know a good external microphone for a canon dslr that is easy for a total beginner to use?

I spent years fighting that lens motor noise in my early videos... what specific Canon camera are you using tho? I need to check if it has the right power for the Rode VideoMic GO II Lightweight Directional Microphone or if you should go with the Takstar SGC-598 Photography Interview Shotgun Mic.

  • External mics use rubber shock mounts to stop lens vibrations
  • The fuzzy thing (deadcat) is mandatory for garden wind
  • Most just plug into the 3.5mm jack

Building on the earlier suggestion, I totally agree that a shotgun mic is a must! I remember my first garden shoot... the wind basically ruined everything until I got an external mic. I ended up getting the Movo VXR10 Universal Video Microphone with Deadcat and it was incredible! Its way under your budget so you can save cash for seeds. Plus it comes with that fuzzy cover which is a total lifesaver for outdoor vlogs!

In my experience, shotgun mics are best for gardening vlogs. Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Buying unpowered mics
  • Skipping the deadcat muff Trust me it helps.
