So I finally pulled the trigger on the X-T5 and im so hyped to start using it but im struggling with picking a single lens for my trip to Japan in three weeks. I really want a Tamron zoom so I dont have to swap lenses constantly while walking around Tokyo.

I did some digging and everyone points to the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 as the ultimate do-it-all lens but then I saw some forum posts saying it might not be sharp enough for that 40 megapixel sensor the X-T5 has and that kinda makes me nervous because whats the point of a high res body if the glass cant keep up? I also looked at the 17-70mm f/2.8 which seems way better for low light and sharper but then I lose all that reach for far away architecture or street details.

Here is what I am looking for:

  • Budget is around $700-$800 max
  • Mostly travel photography and some street stuff at night
  • Needs to be light enough for 10 mile walking days
  • Ideally no lens swapping because I hate getting dust on the sensor

Is the 18-300mm actually good enough for the X-T5 or will it look all mushy when I zoom in? I keep seeing conflicting stuff online about whether it can handle the resolution. Or maybe the 17-70 is the smarter play even if I lose the zoom range...

You might want to be careful with the weight of the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD for 10-mile days... it gets pretty heavy. Quick question tho, are you planning on doing heavy cropping? If not, the 40MP softness might not be that noticeable for you. I would suggest checking used listings for the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD to save cash, since that f/2.8 is way better for Tokyo night shots anyway.

Definitely get the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD. It fits your budget and handles that 40MP sensor way better than the 18-300mm, which gets kinda soft at the long end.
