I finally saved up and got a Nikon Z6 because everyone said it was a great camera but now I realize the lens it came with isnt really doing much for what I need. Im supposed to be the photographer for my cousins big anniversary party next month in Chicago and honestly Im kinda panicking because the room is going to be pretty dark and I have no idea how to pick a lens that works. I heard that Tamron makes lenses that fit Nikon cameras but when I look them up there are so many numbers and letters like f/2.8 and G2 and VC and Di III and I just get so confused. I definitely need a zoom lens because I dont want to be running around and getting in peoples faces while they are eating or dancing but I also dont want it to be so heavy that my neck hurts by the end of the night.
My budget is probably around 800 or maybe 900 dollars if I can find a good deal on a used one because I already spent so much on the camera body itself. I was looking at some of their lenses online and I keep seeing people talk about the 28-75mm or the 70-180mm but I dont know if those even fit on my Z6 without some kind of adapter thingy. Do I need that FTZ adapter everyone talks about or does Tamron make stuff that just clicks right on to the Z mount? I keep hearing that the Z mount is different so I dont want to buy the wrong thing and have it arrive two days before the party and not work.
I really want the photos to look sharp and not all blurry because of the low light in the reception hall. I think the ceiling is pretty high too so I cant just use a flash and bounce it off anything. Is there one specific Tamron zoom that is like the gold standard for this kind of thing for someone who is just starting out and doesnt want to mess up their first big gig? Like is there one that covers enough ground so I dont have to keep switching back and forth? I really want to do a good job for my cousin but the more I read the more I feel like I know nothing at all...
Re: 'To add to the point above...'
TL;DR: Go with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for Nikon Z. It clicks right onto your Z6 without any adapters. Since it is an f/2.8 lens, it lets in plenty of light for that dark anniversary party. It is light enough to carry all night and fits your budget perfectly. Way better than the kit lens for low light, honestly.
To add to the point above: that 28-75mm is your best bet, tho unfortunately I've found it occasionally hunts for focus in really dim light compared to the pricey Nikon glass. Quick technical tips:
