I just bought a Sony ZV-E10 for my trip to Tokyo next month and I'm freaking out a bit about the audio quality. I really want to get some good street vlogging footage but the internal mic seems risky. I looked into the Sony ECM-B10 since it uses the digital shoe and has no wires which sounds amazing but then I saw a bunch of reviews saying the Rode VideoMic GO II sounds way more natural. Im worried about the Rode cable blocking the flip out screen though because thats a dealbreaker for me. My budget is strictly under 200 bucks so the Sony is pushing it. Which one actually handles wind better in a busy city? I really need to decide soon so I can practice before I fly out...
To add to the point above: I actually disagree slightly about sticking only to shotgun mics for street vlogging, especially in a place as noisy as Tokyo. I spent a week filming in Shinjuku last year and honestly, the wind and ambient city roar just killed my audio when I used a camera-top mic. It was a total mess and I ended up having to voiceover half my footage later. I would suggest looking at a wireless setup instead. You might want to consider the Rode Wireless ME Compact Digital Wireless Microphone System. It is way under your 200 dollar budget, leaving you extra cash for sushi! The best part is that since the receiver is so tiny, you can use a right-angle cable and just be careful with how you route it so it doesnt block that ZV-E10 screen. Plus, you can clip the mic right to your shirt. Having the mic closer to your mouth is basically the only way to beat wind without spending a fortune on pro blimps. Just make sure to use the included furry windshield tho. I almost lost mine in a gust of wind once because I didnt twist it on right, so definitely double check that. It saved my footage from being literal static. Shotguns are cool for some things but for busy streets... idk, I would stay cautious. Wireless just gives you way more freedom when you are navigating crowds.
Just saw this today. Last year vlogging in windy Chicago, I found that small mics can be tricky.
Just get any shotgun mic from Sony. Ive been super satisfied with how they work without cables and it wont block your screen. Works well for vlogging!
