What is the absolute best gimbal for a Sony setup right now that won't fail on me during a wedding? I have a massive gig this Saturday in Seattle and my old Zhiyun Crane just completely crapped out on me yesterday. Like the motors just went limp and now it wont even turn on so I'm in a total panic mode trying to find a replacement by tomorrow so I can actually practice balancing it before the ceremony. I'm shooting on a Sony A7SIII with the 24-70mm GM II lens which is a bit of a beast weight-wise when it's zoomed out and I'm worried about the center of gravity shifting.
I've been looking at the DJI RS 3 Pro and the newer RS 4 but I'm honestly so confused by the reviews. Some people on YouTube are saying the RS 4 is just a minor update and I should save the money and get the RS 3 Pro since it's on sale right now but then I read a couple threads saying the RS 4 has way better vertical shooting modes which I might need for some social media content the couple requested. Then there's the RS 4 Pro which is way over my budget of like $700 or $800 max. I also saw the Crane 4 mentioned a lot for Sony users because of the built-in lights and stuff but my last experience with their ZY Play app was a total nightmare so I'm hesitant to go back to Zhiyun.
Is the DJI ecosystem really that much better for Sony autofocus integration? I heard you can control the focus directly from the gimbal dial on certain models without needing a follow focus motor but I cant figure out if that works with the GM II lenses or if it's only for older glass. I really need something that isnt gonna vibrate or freak out when I'm walking backwards during the processional. If anyone has used the RS 3 or RS 4 with an A7SIII please let me know if it's worth the jump... I'm literally going to the camera store in three hours to pick something up.
Dude, honestly, you are gonna be so stoked with the upgrade from that old Crane! Weddings are stressful enough without your gear dying on you right before a huge Seattle gig. Since you're on a tight deadline and budget, definitely go grab the DJI RS 3 Pro Gimbal Stabilizer right now. I've been using it with my A7SIII and the same Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II Lens and it is an absolute beast! The motors on the Pro version are way stronger than the standard RS 3 or RS 4, which is super important because that GM II lens shifts its weight quite a bit when you're zooming in and out. Don't even sweat the RS 4 stuff if you're trying to stay under $800. The RS 3 Pro is fantastic and the auto-locking axes are a total game changer when you're running between the ceremony and the reception. One quick tip tho: make sure you set up the Bluetooth shutter control immediately. It lets you start and stop recording right from the gimbal handle without any messy cables getting in the way of your balance. It works perfectly with the A7SIII! Also, the focus wheel on the RS 3 Pro can totally control your Sony's internal focus motors via the USB connection, so you don't even need a bulky follow focus motor for most shots. It's so much smoother than the Zhiyun software, trust me... You'll be flying through that processional on Saturday!
@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, I had a similar nightmare with my Sony A7SIII Mirrorless Camera where the motors just couldnt handle the torque during a long wedding. What is the total payload weight you're looking at with the mic and monitor? I switched to a higher-rated motor model last year and the stabilization data was fantastic! It really helped with battery efficiency. Definitely double-check those payload specs before you head to the store!
