What do you guys actually consider must-have gear for someone just picking up a Panasonic S5II? I finally pulled the trigger on the body after saving up for what feels like an eternity and Im taking it on a trip to Japan in about three weeks so I really need to get my kit sorted like yesterday.

Ive been doing some reading and everyone seems to say a SmallRig cage is mandatory but honestly I dont know if I really need it? Im mostly doing street photography and some casual vlogging and it seems like it might just add a bunch of weight for no reason if Im not mounting a massive monitor or something. My budget for extras is around 600 bucks tops because the lens already killed my wallet so I gotta be smart about what I buy first.

I also saw people swearing by the SanDisk Extreme Pro cards but then I read some weird thread about V60 vs V90 speeds for the 6k open gate recording and now Im totally lost on whether I need to drop 200 dollars on a single card or if the cheaper ones are fine for b-roll. Should I prioritize extra batteries instead? I heard the S5II eats through them pretty fast when the phase detect is working hard... just not sure what to grab first so I dont regret it when Im halfway across the world.

In my experience, skipping the cage is smart for travel since it's just extra weight. I've tried many cards over the years and the SanDisk 128GB Extreme Pro V60 UHS-II handles the S5II 6K files just fine without the V90 price tag. Definitely grab two extra Panasonic DMW-BLK22 batteries tho. Seriously, you'll need the power when you're shooting all day in Japan... nothing worse than a dead cam at sunset.

To add to the point above: I've been digging into the bitrates for months and I'm honestly happy with the efficiency of the S5II codecs. You really don't need V90 unless you're shooting All-Intra at crazy high bitrates, which this camera doesn't even do internally for most modes. Most 6K open gate stuff tops out around 200Mbps, which is only 25 megabytes per second. Even a V30 card could technically handle it, but for reliability and peace of mind during a once-in-a-lifetime trip, V60 is the sweet spot. My setup for the last few shoots has worked well without any buffer issues:

  • Lexar Professional 1800x SDXC UHS-II Card GOLD Series 128GB - these have been rock solid and slightly more affordable than the SanDisk equivalent in some regions.
  • Anker 737 Power Bank PowerCore 24K - since the S5II supports USB-C Power Delivery, I just plug this in while eating lunch. It charges the battery faster than the camera drains it.
  • Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap Black - much better for street work in Shinjuku than a bulky neck strap that screams tourist. I once forgot my extra batteries on a long day in Kyoto, but because I had a PD-capable power bank, I just kept the camera topped up via USB-C between locations. It basically turns the internal battery into a buffer. No complaints at all with that workflow. Just make sure your cable is rated for high wattage too so you actually get the fast charging speeds.
