Does anyone have a strong recommendation for a leather half case for the M11 that actually fits the new bottom plate design well? I just picked up a silver M11 last week and I am honestly terrified of scratching the bottom since I travel a lot for street photography and I am constantly setting it down on random cafe tables or stone walls.
I have been doing some digging and I keep seeing the official Leica protector pop up but it looks really stiff in the photos and I heard the battery door access is kind of a clunky mess with the new lever design. Then there is the Arte di Mano stuff which looks incredible but honestly $400 is a huge ask right after I just emptied my savings on the body itself. I also looked at Oberwerth but some guys on a different thread mentioned the fitment around the thumb rest can be hit or miss and I really dont want something that feels loose.
I am based in Chicago and leaving for a big trip to Tokyo in three weeks so I need something that ships relatively fast. Budget is ideally around $200 but I could go higher if it is truly worth it. Has anyone tried the Luigi cases lately or maybe something from Lim's? Just want that perfect balance of protection without making the camera feel like a brick...
Are you using an external thumb grip? Unfortunately, the Gariz Design Genuine Leather Half Case for Leica M11 has disappointing clearance for accessories, causing a loose, imprecise fit that honestly dont feel secure.
In my experience with the M system over the years, the M11's lack of a traditional bottom plate really changes what you want from a half case. Brands vary wildly from high-end boutique stuff to mass-produced gear, but honestly, the Lim's Design Leather Half Case for Leica M11 Black is the one I keep coming back to for travel. It has a built-in aluminum base plate that's Arca-Swiss compatible, which is huge if you're setting your camera down on rough surfaces like those stone walls you mentioned. The protection on the bottom is way better than just thin leather. Regarding the battery access, Lim's handles the M11 lever much better than the official Leica protector. You dont have to fight with the leather to get the battery out. Luigi cases have been on my M6 and M10 before, and while they look amazing, they can feel a bit loose on the digital bodies because of how thin the leather is around the screen. Since you're leaving for Tokyo in three weeks, you can usually find Lim's on Amazon or through several US-based retailers, so shipping wont be a headache. It usually runs right around $160, fitting your budget perfectly. Another solid one is the Kaza Deluxe Leather Half Case for Leica M11 Set, which feels a bit more handmade but lacks that metal base plate that really saves the bottom from scratches. Tbh, for a trip to Japan where you're gonna be walking miles, that metal bottom is a lifesaver for the silver finish... nothing hurts worse than that first deep scratch on a $9k body.
Re: "Are you using an external thumb grip? Unfortunately,..." - exactly. I gotta ask, are you using the Leica Thumb Support M11? Clearance there is a nightmare. In my experience, the TP Original Leather Half Case for Leica M11 is the best bet. It uses a bolt-on mount for stability which stops the sliding issues you get with friction-fit cases, and it keeps the M11 profile slim for street work. Way better than that chunky official one.
