I finally pulled the trigger on the X-T5 after shooting Sony for like 10 years and man the colors are just something else. Im so hyped to take this to Tokyo next month for some street stuff but i noticed right away that the grip feels kinda tiny when i throw my 16-55mm f2.8 on there. Its weirdly front heavy which I didnt expect. I already grabbed some fast V60 cards but now im looking at those thumb grips and maybe those soft shutter release buttons but theres so much random junk online. Budget is around 300 bucks for extras. Besides extra batteries what are the actual must-have accessories you guys use to make this thing feel right in the hand?
I totally agree on getting a solid grip for that lens. In my experience, shooting street in Tokyo means youre gonna be walking for miles, so you really want to distribute that weight. Over the years Ive tried basically every strap out there and nothing beats a quick-adjust system when youre weaving through crowds. Since youre trying to stay under 300 bucks, you can definitely skip the overpriced Fuji brand extras and look at these:
Honestly if you're shooting with that 16-55mm f2.8 beast you definitely need some extra meat on the camera body. I had the same issue with it feeling front heavy until i grabbed the SmallRig Handgrip for FUJIFILM X-T5 4136. It makes a massive difference for the grip and adds zero bulk really. Fits like a glove and feels super solid tho. For the shutter feel i went with the Lims Soft Shutter Release Button Red and its been perfect. Its one of those small things that just makes the shooting experience way smoother especially for street stuff. Since you're heading to Tokyo you'll want that extra stability when you're walking around all day. Those two things alone will fix the handling and you'll still have plenty of your budget left for some good ramen.
Saw this earlier and wanted to chime in... you might want to be careful with those screw-in shutter buttons. They look cool but can snag on your strap and actually damage the internal threads if youre not careful. For street photography in Tokyo, I would suggest these instead:
To add to the point above: it seems the consensus is that a grip and strap are mandatory for that lens. Unfortunately, I found that many of the cheaper thumb grips and soft releases people suggest just aren't as good as expected. I had issues with them loosening or even falling off after a few days of heavy street shooting. If youre going to Tokyo, you really need gear that doesnt require constant tightening. I was pretty disappointed with the ergonomics until I bit the bullet on the Fujifilm MHG-XT5 Metal Hand Grip. It feels way more integrated than the third-party stuff and actually lets you access the battery door properly. For that specific lens weight, I actually prefer the BlackRapid Sport Breathe Camera Strap over the Peak Design options. It distributes the weight across your shoulder much better when you're walking miles. Also, dont gamble on third-party power. Just get the official Fujifilm NP-W235 Li-Ion Battery spares. I've had off-brand ones swell or give weird readings in boost mode, which is just frustrating when you're trying to work.
> noticed right away that the grip feels kinda tiny when i throw my 16-55mm f2.8 on there. Its weirdly front heavy which I didnt expect. Man, I totally feel you on that! When I first got my Fuji, I went on this massive walking tour in Osaka and my hand was basically a claw by lunchtime because of that heavy lens setup. I actually ended up picking up a metal baseplate extension halfway through the trip because I was so worried about dropping the thing! It made the balance so much better for those long days. Honestly it saved my wrist. Also, definitely dont skip on some kind of screen protection. I once had a jacket zipper leave a nasty mark on my screen during a crowded train ride and I've been paranoid ever since! Having that peace of mind makes shooting way more fun when you're in the middle of a busy city. Tokyo is gonna be incredible with that setup!
Exactly what I was thinking
Can confirm
Quick reply while I have a sec... Honestly, you might want to be be careful with the weight of that 16-55mm on the X-T5. I had a similar setup on a trip to Kyoto and the stress on my wrist was actually pretty bad by day three. I ended up having to adjust my grip constantly and it just wasnt comfortable. I would suggest focusing on stability and safety so you dont end up dropping the thing in a crowded Tokyo subway. Here are a few things I used to make my setup feel more secure:
Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything said above is spot on.
