Should I just bite the bullet and get the expensive Lensmate thumb grip or is the 15 dollar one on Amazon basically the same thing for the X-T5? I just dropped way too much money on this body and the 35mm f1.4 and honestly my bank account is screaming at me right now but the ergonomics are kind of driving me crazy. It feels a bit small and cramped in my hands compared to my old X-T3 and I feel like I am gonna drop it every time I am out walking around. I am heading to Chicago for a street photography trip next Thursday so I really need to get this sorted like yesterday and I dont have time to keep returning stuff that doesnt fit right.
I have been looking at two main setups and I am totally torn. Option A is going the premium route with the Lensmate folding thumb grip and a Peak Design Slide Lite. It is like 110 bucks total which feels insane for a little piece of metal and some nylon but everyone online raves about how it changes the whole feel of the camera. Option B is just getting a cheap Haoge grip from Amazon and maybe a basic leather wrist strap I saw at a local shop for twenty bucks. My big worry is the cheap grip might scratch the hot shoe or block the back dials because the X-T5 layout is so tight and I have read some horror stories about the tolerances being off on the knockoff brands.
Does the Lensmate actually make that much of a difference for the price or am I just paying for the brand name at this point? I really need something that does not add a ton of bulk because I am trying to travel light with just one small bag and no extra weight. Also if anyone has a better suggestion for a soft shutter release button that actually stays on and does not fall off after two days let me know because I have already lost two of the cheap ones in my living room somehow. I just want the camera to feel secure and comfortable for 8 hours of walking without spending another 200 dollars on bits of plastic and metal...
> My big worry is the cheap grip might scratch the hot shoe or block the back dials Might want to consider skipping the thumb grip entirely. I have seen cheap ones wiggle enough to actually wear down the hot shoe paint. Personally, I found the SmallRig L-Bracket for FUJIFILM X-T5 4137 Arca-Swiss Baseplate way more secure for the cramped grip issue. Also, make sure to put a tiny bit of clear nail polish on your soft release threads or itll definitely vanish in Chicago... trust me.
Late to the party but quick question first... are you planning on sticking with just that 35mm f1.4 for the Chicago trip or adding heavier glass later? If youre staying light, honestly just grab the JJC TA-XT5 Metal Thumb Grip for Fujifilm X-T5 for cheap. To stop losing shutter buttons, get the VKO Soft Shutter Release Button with Rubber O-Ring 10mm and wrap the threads in a tiny bit of plumbing tape. It holds way better than those rubber O-rings do.
Unfortunately, those cheap Amazon thumb grips are a disappointment. I had issues with them scratching the hot shoe and blocking the dials on my X-T5.
