I just got this camera the Fuji X-E4 and honestly I have no idea what I am doing lol. I bought it because I saw some videos on tiktok and youtube saying it was the best for walking around the city and taking photos of random stuff but now that I have it in my hands it feels kinda... slippery? Like there is nothing to hold onto on the front of it which is scary because I am planning to take it out in New York next weekend for my first real attempt at street photography and I dont want to drop it on the sidewalk and break it on the very first day.

Sorry if this is a really basic question but what are the things I actually NEED to buy so I dont ruin this thing or make it easier to use? I keep seeing people with these little metal bits that go in the top where the flash usually goes i think its called a thumb grip or something?? does that actually help with the shaking? And also those little red buttons that screw into the top do they do anything besides look cool because they do look pretty sweet but I dont want to waste money if they are useless or if they break the camera somehow.

My budget is about 200 or 300 bucks for extra stuff right now and I really want to make sure I have what I need before I head out. Here is what I think I might need but please tell me if I am wrong:

  • a strap that isnt the one that came in the box because it feels cheap and scratchy on my neck
  • maybe a case or a grip thing for the bottom so my hand fits better
  • extra batteries because I heard the battery life isnt great on these small ones
  • some kind of bag that doesnt look like a camera bag so I dont stand out too much

I am super new to this whole world and all the technical talk about lenses and sensors is way over my head right now I just want to take nice pictures of buildings and people in the subway without fumbling around too much. Is there anything else that is like a must-have for a total beginner who is probably going to be walking around for like 6 hours straight...

Honestly, the X-E4 is like a bar of soap. I would suggest getting the Fujifilm MHG-XE4 Metal Hand Grip immediately because it makes a huge difference. Be careful with those soft release buttons tho; they look cool but can actually damage the shutter mechanism if they snag on something in your bag. Just grab the Wasabi Power NP-W126S 2-Pack for batteries to save some cash.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I wanted to jump in and mention that power management is gonna be your biggest hurdle for a 6-hour walk in NYC. The X-E4 is notoriously thirsty, so id pick up at least two Fujifilm NP-W126S Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery packs. Stick to the official ones; they deal with the heat better than the cheap knockoffs when youre shooting all day and they wont swell up inside the camera. For a bag that blends in, the Chrome Industries Kadet Sling 9L is my go-to for city shooting. It doesnt look like a camera bag at all, which is better for staying low-key on the subway. Its also basically bulletproof and weather-resistant in case you get caught in a sudden shower. Skip the red buttons for now. They look cool but can snag on your shirt. If you want protection, just get a B+W 39mm XS-Pro Clear MRC-Nano 010M Filter for your lens glass. It keeps the optics safe from fingerprints and city grime without messing with your image quality. TL;DR: Grab official spare batteries, a stealthy sling bag like the Chrome Kadet, and a high-quality lens filter for peace of mind.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I recommend the Lensmate Fujifilm X-E4 Folding Thumbrest for better handling. It provides a secure anchor point without adding bulk. For the strap, the Peak Design Leash Camera Strap is much more comfortable for all-day use and uses a quick-connect system. If youre worried about attention, the Peak Design Everyday Sling 3L is a discreet bag that doesnt look like a traditional camera pack.
