grabbing an X-S20 for my Japan trip next month and kinda overwhelmed. read the cooling fan is a must-have but others say its overkill for short clips? also confused about which cage fits without blocking the battery door... what are the actual essentials for a $300 budget?

Just catching up on this thread. I had a pretty disappointing experience trying to cut corners on power for my Fuji setup.

Quick reply while I have a sec. In my experience, youll be fine without the fan. Most setups ive used feel bulky, but SmallRig Cage for FUJIFILM X-S20 4230 is the one that gets the battery door right. To stay under budget, maybe grab a Kingston Canvas Go Plus 128GB SDXC V30 instead of the fan tho... having extra space for 4K clips was way more useful on my last trip.

Honestly, I wasted so much money on cooling gear when I first started shooting with these smaller bodies. Last year in Tokyo, I lugged a fan around everywhere, thinking the humidity would kill my sensor. I didnt use it once because most of my street clips were under two minutes. What actually saved me was a solid cage. I learned the hard way that a poorly designed one makes swapping batteries a nightmare in the middle of a crowded train station. Essentials based on my mileage:

  • A cage with an offset side rail so the battery door actually swings clear
  • Two extra high-capacity batteries because the heat eats them faster than youd think
  • A fast UHS-II card to avoid buffer stalls In my experience, you really dont need the fan unless youre filming 30-minute interviews in the sun. For a trip, keep it light. Ive tried many setups and the minimalist one always wins. Technical specs matter, but portability is king when youre walking 20k steps a day in Shinjuku.
