Okay so I finally did it! I saved up for months and just bought my first real camera which is the Sony a7 IV and omg the pictures look so good but I have a major problem that I didnt even think about before I bought it. The strap that comes in the box is like super scratchy and stiff? I tried wearing it around my house for like an hour just to practice and my neck was already starting to hurt which is kinda pathetic lol but I'm just not used to having that much weight hanging off me I guess. I mean the camera isnt even that big but with the lens on there it feels way heavier than I expected.
So I was thinking maybe I need something with more padding but then I saw some people online talking about these sling things where it goes across your chest instead of just around your neck? My logic was that it might distribute the weight better but I'm honestly so confused by all the different clips and systems and I dont want the camera to fall off if I dont click it in right. I saw this brand called Peak Design and everyone seems to love them but they're kinda pricey and I dont even know if the anchors will work on my Sony or if I'm gonna break something by accident. I'm going to Yellowstone in about three weeks so I really need to find something soon because I'm gonna be hiking a lot and I dont want to be miserable the whole time.
I have about $60 or maybe $75 left in my budget after blowing the rest on the lens so I cant go too crazy with professional gear. I saw a few things while I was browsing:
- the ones with the little red loops
- thick neoprene ones that look like a gym bag strap
- some leather ones that look cool but maybe they're uncomfortable?
Is there a specific one that is like super soft on the skin? Or should I be looking for something wider? I saw one that looked like it was made of seatbelt material which sounds weird but maybe it slides better? I just want to be able to walk around all day without feeling like my neck is being sliced in half. Does anyone have a favorite that works specifically well with the Sony bodies? Sorry if this is a really basic question I just have no idea where to start and everything on Amazon looks the same...

Ive been through a dozen straps over the years, and honestly, those stock Sony straps are literal torture devices. I learned that the hard way on a week-long trip to Zion years ago. Since youre on a budget and headed to Yellowstone, dont overthink the fancy branding too much. You just need better weight distribution.
- For pure comfort, OP/TECH USA Pro Strap Black is the goat. Its made of thick neoprene, which basically acts like a shock absorber when youre walking. It looks a bit dorky, but your neck wont feel a thing even after eight hours.
- If you really want that cross-body feel, check out the BlackRapid Classic Retro RS-4 Camera Strap. It shifts everything to your shoulder and keeps the camera at your hip. In my experience, neoprene is way softer on the skin than seatbelt webbing or leather. Seatbelt straps look cool but they chafe like crazy if youre just wearing a t-shirt. Stick with the squishy stuff and save your money for an extra battery or some bear spray for the hike.
