so i finally picked up an r6 and i have the ef adapter but now i need some actual glass for this engagement shoot im doing in two weeks. im totally stuck between the sigma 35mm 1.4 art and the 50mm 1.4 art. I can find them both used for like 600-700 bucks which is my max budget right now. i usually shoot outdoors in parks so i have plenty of space to back up but i want that creamy bokeh look for the couple. the 35 seems versatile but maybe the 50 is better for actual portraits? honestly i cant decide if the 35 is gonna distort their faces too much if i get close. which one would you guys grab for an r6?

The 50mm is definitely the right call for this. I'm very satisfied with the optical performance and HSM autofocus of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Canon EF on the R-series bodies. Technically, you're getting much better compression and significantly less barrel distortion than the 35mm provides at close range. Since you have the space to back up, the 50mm works well for both full-body shots and tighter portraits. I've found the eye-tracking on the R6 is extremely snappy with this specific glass through the adapter. You can pick these up used for around $550 if you shop around, which is a total steal for this level of glass. Its a very solid investment that fits your budget perfectly and delivers that creamy background youre after. No complaints here, its a reliable workhorse.

> i want that creamy bokeh look for the couple To add to the point above: look for a used Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Canon EF. Its focal length provides superior background compression and cleaner subject isolation. Youll be happy with the results.

To add to the point above: basically, the consensus here is that the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Canon EF is the balanced choice, while the 85mm is the bokeh beast. Since youre on a budget, the 50mm is usually easier to find used in good shape. Honestly, dont sweat the 35mm for portraits unless you want a lot of environment. Stick with the 50 or 85 and youll be golden. Feel free to ask if you have more questions about the adapter setup!

I've been using the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Canon EF on my R6 for ages and it is absolutely fantastic! Seriously, for an engagement shoot, you want that rock-solid reliability and the 50mm is the safest, most amazing choice you can make. The autofocus is snappy and it just doesnt fail you when the pressure is on. Definitely skip the 35mm for this one because facial distortion is a real risk when youre doing close-ups... nobody wants a weirdly wide nose in their professional photos! Go with the 50mm, its a total beast and fits your budget perfectly. Youre gonna love the results!
