So i finally pulled the trigger on a Sigma fp after eyeing it for months... been shooting pro video for like 8 years mostly on bigger rigs but i wanted something modular and tiny for travel. i am seriously hyped to start grading that 12-bit CinemaDNG footage but man the media situation is stressing me out a bit lol. i tried an old T5 i had in my kit and it just keeps dropping frames once the buffer fills up which is weird because i thought those were the gold standard for these setups. maybe its just getting old? i need something that wont fail me because im flying out to iceland in about three weeks to shoot a passion project near the glaciers and i cant afford to have the drive disconnect or overheat while im out there in the cold. budget is around 250 bucks maybe 300 if it actually makes a difference in reliability. i see everyone talking about the samsung t7 shield but then some people say the write speeds throttle on long takes with the fp specifically. has anyone tried the angelbird or maybe the sandisk pro blade system? i just need it to be small enough to mount on my cage without looking ridiculous. what are you guys actually using for long 4k raw takes that doesnt die after ten minutes?
Honestly, the Sigma fp is notoriously picky when it comes to power draw and sustained write speeds for that 12-bit raw. I have been through a few setups and you really have to be careful with consumer-grade drives because they usually cant handle the data rate for more than a minute or two.
stumbled upon this today and i am so stoked for your iceland trip! seriously that footage is gonna look unreal with those glaciers. i had the same frame-dropping nightmare when i first started using my fp and it was so frustrating. basically most consumer drives use slc caching... it's super fast for like a minute but then the speed totally tanks once the cache fills up. the sigma needs a drive that can handle high sustained writes without hitting a wall for the whole take. i finally upgraded my setup and it made a world of difference:
