I just got a Sony a6400 for a trip to Chicago next month and honestly I have no idea what I'm doing lol. I want to try street photography like those cool shots of people walking but the kit lens feels kinda blurry? Someone told me Sigma makes good stuff for cheaper so I was looking at their site but theres so many numbers.

I saw a 16mm and a 30mm and a 56mm and my brain is melting. I think I want something small so people dont stare at me while I take pictures. My budget is like 400 or 500 bucks max. Is 30mm the right one for just walking around? Sorry if this is a super basic question but the more I read the more confused I get...

Yeah that kit lens is honestly a waste of glass. I was pretty disappointed with mine too... it just makes everything look flat and muddy especially in low light. If youre doing street in Chicago, you want something fast but unfortunately the Sigma trio all have some annoying quirks you should know about before you spend your cash.

  • Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E: People hype this one up but honestly I found it way too bulky for a compact setup. Its not discrete at all. Because its so wide, you have to get awkwardly close to people to get a good shot, and they will definitely notice you with that huge front element.
  • Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E: I had issues with this being way too tight for city streets. Its great for portraits but if youre trying to capture the energy of a sidewalk, you end up just getting someones ear or a blurry shoulder. Not as versatile as people claim for travel, and honestly not as good as expected for tight spaces.
  • Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E: This is the one to get, even tho the autofocus is kinda loud and can hunt a bit in shadows. Its the right size for an a6400 and the view is basically what your eyes see naturally. Just get the 30mm and call it a day. Its not a perfect lens and the build feels a bit plasticky compared to the expensive Sony glass, but for under 500 bucks it gets the job done better than the kit lens. Just dont expect it to stay locked on perfectly if people are moving fast... it can be frustrating.
