What CFexpress Type B cards are you guys actually using for high-speed bursts on the newer Nikon bodies? I finally pulled the trigger on a Z8 for my trip to the Everglades next month and I am beyond hyped to try and catch some ospreys in action but man the card situation is confusing. I am trying to decide between the Sony Tough 256GB and the ProGrade Digital Cobalt 325GB and I honestly cant tell if the extra price for the Cobalt is worth it or if its just marketing fluff. I heard the Lexar Professional Gold is okay too but some people say they overheat when you are doing long 20fps raw bursts? I really dont want to miss a shot because the buffer is lagging because of a slow write speed. My budget is capped at like $250 for now since I am already broke from buying the body and the 180-600mm lens haha so I need the best bang for my buck that wont fail on me in the humidity down south. Is the Sony Tough fast enough to keep that buffer clear or should I just suck it up and get the ProGrade? Or is there some other brand I am totally ignoring that works better for Nikons specifically...

To add to the point above: the Angelbird AV Pro CFexpress Type B SE 512GB is a safer budget choice. It provides excellent sustained performance and thermal management for bursts without the premium price.

I've been shooting with the Z8 since launch and honestly, you dont need to spend Cobalt money to get reliable 20fps performance. The key is looking at the sustained write speed rather than that flashy peak speed on the sticker. For ospreys, you're gonna be holding that shutter down, so you need a card that doesnt throttle after three seconds. I have been very satisfied with these specific alternatives which actually fit your budget way better:

  • Delkin Devices 512GB POWER CFexpress Type B
  • This is a total workhorse. It maintains a sustained write speed of around 1500 MB/s. It is more than enough for the Z8 buffer and costs way less than the Sony.
  • Sabrent 512GB Rocket CFX CFexpress Type B
  • Truly the best bang for your buck right now. I've used this for high-speed bursts and had no complaints regarding heat or lag.
  • Angelbird 512GB AV PRO CFexpress B SE
  • Very stable for the price. It handles the 20fps raw files well enough for most wildlife scenarios. The Delkin Power is my top recommendation for your Everglades trip tho. Its built like a tank and handles humidity and heat better than most. You get double the storage of the Sony for a lower price point, which is huge when you are shooting thousands of frames of birds. Just make sure your card reader is actually rated for these speeds... it makes a massive difference when you are back at the hotel trying to dump footage.

> I am trying to decide between the Sony Tough 256GB and the ProGrade Digital Cobalt 325GB Honestly, the Sony TOUGH 256GB CFexpress Type B was a huge letdown for my Z8. It looks great on paper but the sustained write speed is actually pretty disappointing. Ngl, the Lexar Professional Gold 256GB CFexpress Type B overheated on me way too fast during bursts tho. Get the ProGrade Digital Cobalt 325GB CFexpress Type B. Its not marketing fluff. The performance is actually necessary for high speed bursts.
