So I recently got my hands on a Leica M10 because I wanted to finally try rangefinders but honestly I have no idea what I am doing half the time and the camera doesn't even have a flash built into it which I didnt even realize until I tried taking some pictures of my dog in the dark and they were just black squares. My best friend is having a small indoor dinner party in Chicago next month and I really want to take some nice photos but I'm totally lost on what kind of flash to buy. I keep seeing people talk about TTL and manual mode and sync speeds and it all sounds like math class to me lol. I just need something simple that wont break the camera since I heard some flashes can actually fry the internal parts if they aren't compatible.

Here is what I am looking for:

  • super easy to use because I am a total newbie
  • nothing too big or bulky because I like how small the camera is
  • budget is maybe $350 max
  • something that does the settings for me automatically if that is a thing

Is there a specific Leica brand one I have to get or do other brands work just as well? I'm really scared of buying the wrong thing and ruining the hot shoe thingy on top...

Nice choice on the M10. Its a stellar camera but yeah, the lack of a built-in flash can be a shock. You definitely want something with TTL—that basically means the camera handles the math for you so you dont get those black squares. To keep things small and safe for your electronics, stick to these:

  • Leica SF 40 Compact Flash is probably your best bet. Its got a simple dial interface, supports full TTL, and was literally designed for the M series. Its tiny but powerful enough for a dinner party. You might need to look for a used one to stay under that $350 mark tho.
  • Leica SF 24D Compact Flash is an older, even smaller option. You can find these used for around $200. Its less powerful than the SF 40 but fits the rangefinder aesthetic perfectly. Dont worry about frying the hot shoe with these... they use the correct trigger voltage for digital M bodies. Just slide it on, turn it to the TTL setting, and you're good to go.
