Can someone please tell me which external flash actually works with the Canon EOS R cameras without being a total nightmare to set up? I am honestly so frustrated right now because I bought this cheap one off Amazon because the reviews said it was fine but it just does nothing. Like it sits on top of the camera and looks fancy but it wont fire when I take a picture and the menu on my R8 says incompatible accessory which makes zero sense because the box said it works for Canon cameras.

I have a wedding for my cousin coming up in three weeks in a really dark basement venue in Seattle and I am freaking out because I dont want to be the guy with the dark blurry photos. I have literally no idea what I am doing and all these terms like TTL and HSS and master slave mode are just making my head spin like I dont even know what I dont know. Do I have to buy the official Canon ones that cost like five hundred dollars? Because my budget is really more like $200 or maybe $250 max after spending all my savings on the camera body itself.

I just want something that I can slide on and turn on and have it work without me needing a degree in rocket science. Is Godox a good brand? I keep seeing that name pop up but then people say you need a special trigger thingy and I just want the light to come out of the flash on top of the camera. Is there a specific model that is plug and play for a complete idiot like me? Sorry if this is a basic question but I have spent three hours watching YouTube videos and I feel more confused than when I started. Should I just return this one and get something else? I really need help before I just give up and use my iPhone flash which I know will look terrible...

I went through this exact same headache last year. When I moved to the R system, I was terrified of fryin the new pins with a cheap unit. I ended up grabbing the Godox V860III-C Speedlite for Canon and honestly, its been rock solid for every event. No weird errors, just reliable light every time. TL;DR: Grab the Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon. It is affordable and totally plug-and-play for your wedding gig.

@Reply #2 - good point! Is the basement ceiling high?

Unfortunately, those cheap generic flashes are usually a letdown and had issues with the newer Canon shoe pins. You really need something reliable for a wedding.
