Which external flash works best for Canon DSLR cameras?

Ive been shooting with my 5D Mark IV for years and always relied on my old 430EX II but it finally kicked the bucket right before this big corporate gala I have on Saturday. Talk about bad timing. I was thinking about just grabbing another Canon speedlite like the 600EX-RT because I know the menu system and the TTL is usually reliable but man they are expensive these days and my logic was why pay that much if the third party stuff is catching up.

I looked at Godox like the V1 or the V860III but I keep hearing mixed things about the AF assist beam not working right on certain Canon bodies or the hot shoe being a bit wobbly on the newer mounts. I need something that wont overheat after fifty shots because this gala is gonna be fast paced and I cant have the flash recycling for five seconds while people are walking. My budget is around 350 bucks and I need to order it tonight to get it here in time to test it.

Should I just bite the bullet and get the Canon brand even if it stretches the budget or is there a specific Godox or Neewer model that actually plays nice with the 5D without weird glitches? Im mostly worried about the communication between the body and the flash because if the TTL fails mid-shoot Im toast...

Unfortunately, my Godox V1-C Flash for Canon was not as good as expected with that wobbly hot shoe. Grab the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT so you dont have glitches... lmk if you need setup tips.

Adding my two cents because I went through this last month. I actually tried the Godox V1-C Round Head Flash and was pretty disappointed with the build quality. The hot shoe mount felt really flimsy on my 5D and it honestly felt like it was gonna break during a long event when I was moving fast. Since you're trying to stay under 350 and need speed, here are a couple of cheaper alternatives that usually work better:

  • Godox V860III-C Ving Li-ion Speedlite
  • Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II TTL Speedlite The V860III uses a lithium battery so the recycle time is way faster than the old AA ones you're used to. I'd also recommend checking out FlashHavoc.com for their comparison charts. They explain all the weird AF assist glitches with third party brands so you dont get stuck with a lemon right before your gala. Just be careful with the TTL because it isnt always as 100% accurate as the expensive Canon stuff tho.
