So i basically just spent my entire savings on a Canon R5 and that massive 24-70mm f/2.8 RF lens and now im panicking because my old $50 tripod from college is literally bowing under the weight of the setup. I have this trip to Iceland coming up in exactly 12 days and I realized if I try to take long exposures of the waterfalls with this flimsy thing my camera is gonna end up in a river and im gonna be out several thousand dollars. I need something that can actually hold the weight of the R series body plus that heavy glass without drifting or vibrating every time the wind blows.
Im currently torn between two very different directions and i cant decide what to pull the trigger on. First is the Peak Design carbon fiber travel tripod. I love how small it packs down which is great for the flight and hiking but i keep reading mixed reviews about the center column being a bit wobbly when its fully extended? And it is like $600 which is pushing my budget to the absolute limit after buying the camera. The other one im looking at is the Manfrotto Befree Advanced Carbon Fiber. It seems more like a traditional tripod and maybe more stable for the high winds i expect? but its definitely bulkier to strap to a pack.
Is the Peak Design worth the extra cash for an R5 setup or am I just paying for the brand name and the fancy folding legs at this point? I also saw a Benro Tortoise that looked decent but i dont know if i trust the build quality for a pro body like this. I really need something that fits in a carry-on because im not checking any bags for this trip and it has to be rock solid for 30 second exposures. What are you guys using for your R series stuff? I really need to order this by tomorrow so it gets here in time for me to test it before I fly out...
^ This. Also, travel tripods are unfortunately often a letdown in high wind. I had issues with micro-jitters because tbh the leg diameters were too small for an R5.
TL;DR: Avoid center columns for Iceland. The Benro Tortoise Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod with GX35 Ball Head is a much safer bet than Peak Design for long exposures in heavy wind. Honestly, putting an R5 and that heavy RF 24-70mm on a travel tripod in Iceland is risky. Ive seen plenty of setups blow over there. Be careful with the Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod because while its light, those thin lower leg sections and the hexagonal center column basically act like a sail in the wind. Youll get micro-vibrations that ruin your sharpness during 30s exposures. If youre doing waterfalls, you need absolute rigidity. I would suggest looking at the Benro Tortoise Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod with GX35 Ball Head. Since it doesnt have a center column, the apex is much wider and way more stable. It fits in a standard carry-on if you unscrew the ball head. Another solid option is the Leofoto LS-324C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod. Its built like a tank and handles the weight of pro glass without drifting. Whatever you get, make sure to bring a stone bag or some way to weigh it down. Just dont use your camera bag as a weight if its gonna swing in the wind tho... that actually makes the vibrations worse. Get something with at least a 25lb load capacity to be safe with that R5 setup. Its better to carry an extra pound of tripod than to watch your R5 hit the rocks.
