I just got this Canon camera, I think it is the R7, for my upcoming trip to Yellowstone next month and I'm super confused about the memory cards. I tried taking some photos of my dog running in the backyard yesterday just to practice and the camera keeps stopping and showing this little busy bar on the screen. It wont let me take more photos for like ten seconds and its really frustrating because I missed the best shots. I think I have some old cards from my point and click camera but they are clearly not working right. I went on Amazon to look for new ones and my head is spinning with all these numbers like V30 and V90 and UHS-II and stuff. I really dont want to spend a fortune because I already spent so much on the camera and lens but I also dont want to ruin my trip because I bought the wrong thing. My budget is maybe 100 bucks for two cards if that is even possible. I just want to be able to hold the button down and take a bunch of pictures of the animals without it freezing up on me. Does it matter which brand I get or are they all the same? What kind of card do I actually need so the camera doesn't lag when I am shooting fast?
Honestly, those old cards you have are basically useless for a high-res body like the R7. It is super frustrating when you miss the best shots because of that buffer lag. Unfortunately, you wont find many decent V90 cards in your budget since they usually cost a fortune. I have had issues with cheaper off-brands before and they were definitely not as good as expected... they just feel way too risky for a big trip. If you want reliability without spending a ton, try these:
I struggled with this when I first started wildlife photography. My old cards were only rated at 30MB/s and my camera would just lock up. Switching to V60 made a huge difference for clearing the buffer on bursts. Try these:
Any updates on this?
Ugh, im right there with you... it is honestly so ridiculous. I had the exact same thing happen during a trip to the Smokies last year. Saw this gorgeous elk and my camera just froze up with that stupid busy bar while the elk walked right into the trees. I wanted to scream. You really have to be careful because even when you spend a lot, things still fail and let you down.
