Oh my gosh okay so I just bought my very first condo in Chicago and I am SO excited to start painting and fixing it up this weekend! But literally I have zero tools right now and my budget is super tight after the down payment. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am completely new to all of this DIY stuff and have no idea how couponing works.

I need to buy a bunch of stuff from Ace Hardware because there is one right down the street from me. Here is what I need to get:

  • 3 gallons of wall paint (looking at a nice sage green)
  • Paint rollers and brushes
  • A basic hammer and screwdriver set
  • Maybe a ladder if I can afford it

I heard someone mention you can get a 20% off coupon for Ace Hardware but I cant find one that actually works online. Everything I click on seems fake or expired and Im getting kinda confused. Does anyone know if there is an active 20% off coupon for this month? Or maybe a trick to get one like signing up for their rewards thing? I really need to save some cash on this haul...

Congrats on the new condo. In my experience fixing up old brick flats in Chicago over the years, Ace is definitely the most convenient but you have to play their rewards game right. I remember when I did my first rehab on a place in Lincoln Square, I walked in completely blind and spent way too much on Benjamin Moore Regal Select and some basic hand tools. To get those discounts right now, here is what works:

  • Sign up for the Ace Rewards program online. They immediately email you a 5 dollar coupon, and they often send a 10% or 15% off coupon for your first purchase.
  • Download the Ace Hardware app. They usually run a promo where you get an extra 5 dollar coupon just for downloading it and linking your account.
  • Look out for the Ace Bag Sale. This is their famous promo where they give you a paper bag and you get 20% off almost everything you can fit inside. These usually happen in late winter and late summer. For your tools, dont cheap out on the brushes. Grab a Wooster Shortcut brush and a Purdy roller cover. They hold paint way better. Good luck with the move, Chicago winters make indoor DIY projects the perfect weekend escape.
