So I finally bit the bullet and grabbed the a7IV after saving up forever but now I realize I might have blown my whole budget on the body and the 24-70 lens. I leave for a trip to Iceland in like six days and I am totally panicking because I havent bought any accessories yet. I read online that I absolutely need CFexpress Type A cards for the best performance but man they are so pricey compared to SD cards and I dont know if I really need that speed for just regular shooting and some light vlogging.
Also people keep saying the battery life is better than the older models but then other threads say you need at least three spares if you are shooting in the cold which is definitely gonna be the case for me next week. I am looking at my bank account and I have maybe $300 left for everything else so I need to prioritize what is actually essential versus what is just nice to have. I saw some guys saying a screen protector is a must but then others say it messes with the touch sensitivity on the a7IV screen specifically. I am just really confused on what to buy right now. Do I get the official Sony batteries or are third party ones like Wasabi actually safe for this specific model? I dont want to fry my new camera right before the biggest trip of my life. What are the absolute bare minimum must-have things I need to grab before I get on that plane on Tuesday?

Like someone mentioned, forget those CF cards. In my experience, a good strap is way more important. I remember hiking for hours with the stock strap and it killed my neck. Switched to the Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap for better weight distribution. Also, grab a SmallRig Screen Protector for Sony Alpha 7 IV. It uses tempered glass that hasnt messed with my touch sensitivity at all.

You are gonna have such an amazing time in Iceland! That a7IV is a total beast for landscapes. Since you are tight on cash, definitely skip those CFexpress cards for now. Grab a Lexar Professional 1667x SDXC UHS-II 128GB instead. It is super reliable and way cheaper while still being fast enough for vlogging and high-res shots. I am a huge stickler for safety, so please dont risk third-party batteries right before a big trip. If you cant afford more OEM ones, just get the Sony BC-QZ1 Battery Charger so you can fast-charge your single battery at every coffee stop. It is way safer and faster than using generic USB cables! Also, you definitely need these:
- Giottos Rocket Air Blaster Large to keep the sensor clean from that Icelandic wind and grit.
- ProGrade Digital SD UHS-II Dual-Slot Card Reader for quick, safe transfers to your laptop. Keep it simple and enjoy the views!

Like someone mentioned, you really gotta watch out for the cold. Tbh I would be really cautious about going the third party route for batteries on a camera this new. I think I heard somewhere that the a7IV firmware is way pickier about non-Sony cells and might throw constant warning pop-ups on your screen. Not sure if it actually risks frying the board, but IIRC some people reported that those cheap brands lose their charge way faster in freezing weather compared to the OEM ones. I would suggest biting the bullet and getting at least one official Sony battery instead of three cheap ones. Iceland is literally the worst place to test if a generic battery is gonna hold up... just make sure to keep your spares in an inside pocket close to your body heat.

I am in the exact same boat right now prepping for a trip to the Lofoten Islands next month. Even after years of shooting professionally, I still get that pre-trip anxiety about gear failure, especially with the high data rates on the a7IV. Just saw this while checking my own packing list and figured I would share some data. In my experience, you should focus on technical reliability over raw speed to stay within budget:
- For storage, you do not need CFexpress for vlogging or standard stills. A ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold 128GB handles 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 at 200Mbps without dropping frames and is far more cost-effective.
- Weather protection is non-negotiable in Iceland. The Peak Design Shell Camera Cover Medium is essential because even weather-sealed Sony bodies can struggle with constant salt spray or freezing sleet.
- For power, I have had great luck with the SmallRig NP-FZ100 USB-C Rechargeable Battery. It is 2400mAh and allows you to charge via USB-C from a battery bank while in your bag, which is a lifesaver when the cold drains your cells.
- Grab a LensPen NLP-1 Lens Cleaner. In high-wind environments, microfiber cloths just smear salt and mist across the front element. Stick to the V60 cards and prioritize moisture protection. Salt and mist are the real threats to your gear right now, not the write speeds.

Man, congrats on the a7IV! It is a beast but yeah, accessories will drain your wallet fast. Honestly, skip those CFexpress Type A cards for now. I bought one and was super disappointed because unless you are doing crazy high-speed bursts, it is just not as good as expected for the price. Just grab a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-II V90 and you will be totally fine for vlogging and stills. Iceland is gonna kill your battery tho. I tried those Wasabi packs and unfortunately had issues with them reporting the wrong percentage or just dying in the freezing cold. It is really not worth the risk of missing a shot. If you can, just get one extra Sony NP-FZ100 Rechargeable Battery and a solid power bank like the Anker 737 Power Bank PowerCore 24K to charge over USB-C between locations. You are gonna have an epic trip!
