So I finally caved and bought a Sigma fp because I wanted something tiny for my street photography trip to Berlin next month but honestly I feel like a total noob again. I've been shooting with Sony and Canon rigs for over ten years so I thought I knew what I was doing but this thing is just a tiny metal brick. It’s gorgeous but ergonomics-wise it’s kind of a nightmare right out of the box. I’m used to having a deep grip and a viewfinder so holding this thing feels like I’m gonna drop it every five seconds. I have about 600 bucks left in my budget to rig this thing out before I fly out.
I already know I need extra batteries because the life on these seems pretty tragic but what else is actually essential for a usable daily setup? I’m looking at the smallrig stuff vs the official sigma cage and grip but it gets expensive fast. Also since I want to try some 12-bit cinema dng video do I really need a dedicated ssd mount or can I get away with just fast sd cards for 8-bit stuff? If you guys were building a kit from scratch for a mix of street stills and light video what are the absolute non-negotiables to make this feel like a real camera...
been thinking about your setup for a bit and honestly, the ergonomics get way better once you add a thumb rest. i found that combining a cage with a Haoge THB-XP Thumb Up Rest makes it feel much more like a real camera for street stuff. you mentioned missing a viewfinder... i'm really satisfied with the Sigma LVF-11 LCD Viewfinder. it's basically essential if youre shooting outdoors in berlin. it's big, yeah, but the magnification is killer and it adds that extra point of contact for stability. for the video part, you can get away with 8-bit dng on cards. i use the Sony SF-G Tough Series 128GB SDXC V90 and it works well, no complaints. if you want more technical bits, check out the l-mount forum or wolfcrow's guide online... they really helped me dial in the settings. grab some Panasonic DMW-BLC12 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery spares too since they're compatible and reliable.
I've been shooting with the fp for a bit now and honestly, I'm super satisfied with how my kit ended up after some trial and error. When I first got it, I spent way too much on the fancy branded accessories, but then I realized the third-party stuff is totally fine and saves a ton of cash. For your Berlin trip, dont feel like you have to drop the whole 600 bucks. I actually found that adding a SmallRig Wooden Side Handle 2093C made a huge difference for that brick-like feeling you mentioned. It gives it a nice retro look too, which I love. On the video side, if you're just doing 8-bit, you can definitely get away with fast SD cards. I use the SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB SDXC UHS-I cards and they work well for my casual street clips. No complaints here. If you do decide to go 12-bit later, maybe look for a used drive on eBay to save some bucks. Also, definitely pick up some third-party batteries. I've been using the Powerextra BP-51 2-Pack Replacement Batteries and Charger for a year. They're way cheaper than the Sigma ones and honestly last just as long in my experience. It makes the tragic battery life much easier to deal with when you have four of them in your pocket ready to go. You're gonna have a blast in Berlin, just keep it simple and light...
Official grip was unfortunately a letdown. I had issues with handling. Grab these instead, you'll love it:
