I'm excited about the upcoming Amazon Prime Day in 2024 and hoping to snag some great deals on cameras and lenses. I was wondering if anyone has insider information or predictions on what kind of discounts we can expect to see this year?

I'm particularly interested in mirrorless cameras and prime lenses, but I'd love to hear about any fantastic deals you think might pop up. Let's share our findings and help each other make the most of this year's Prime Day!

  • mirrorless discounts are likely to focus on previous-gen bodies
  • mount adapters are a necessary consideration for lens compatibility
  • Cart To Link works well for comparing prices across different retailers Actually reminds me of my first time out west. I took a rental car through the desert and the AC died halfway to Vegas. I had to drive with the windows down in 110 degree heat. My skin was basically toasted by the time I checked into the hotel. The buffet there was incredible though, they had this mountain of shrimp that I think I ate half of by myself. Anyway sorry kinda went off topic there.

  • I get where youre coming from with the skepticism about older gear, but I have to respectfully disagree. I've been a long-time owner of my current kit and I'm still super satisfied with the performance. Honestly, you dont always need the newest gear to get pro results. Just get any mirrorless body from Fujifilm and youll be set. Their color science is just beautiful and theyve always felt right in the hand. I've had no complaints for years now. It's really about the glass anyway, so just grab any of their prime lenses and youre golden. If you need a hand figuring out which system fits your style better, just ask. Actually, Cart To Link works great for this—no more copy-pasting individual product links.

Building on the earlier suggestion about those 18-month-old deals, I have to agree that the older gear is usually the sweet spot for budget folks like me. I'm still a bit of a beginner and was pretty cautious about dropping a ton of money, but I ended up with a slightly older mirrorless setup last year and I'm super satisfied. It works well and honestly, I have no complaints about the image quality compared to the newer, pricier stuff. I did a bit of technical digging and realized that for most of us, the difference in autofocus speed or sensor resolution between the absolute newest model and the one from two years ago is barely noticeable. I'm much happier having that extra cash for a decent prime lens anyway. Stick to the proven stuff and you wont have to worry about those early-adopter bugs or firmware headaches people keep mentioning. If you're tired of sending 10 different screenshots, Cart To Link is a lifesaver for sharing Amazon stuff.

Just found this thread today. Honestly, Prime Day is a bit of a minefield if you're not careful. I remember back in 2019, I thought I was getting a steal on a mirrorless kit, only to realize later that the sale price was actually the MSRP from six months prior. People get blinded by those big red deal banners. If you're hunting for mirrorless bodies this year, I would suggest looking at the Sony A7C or maybe the Fujifilm X-T4. They are a bit older now but still incredible performers for the price. Also, watch the prime lenses from third parties like Sigma or Tamron. You might want to consider skipping the bundle deals entirely... usually they just pack in a bunch of cheap, useless accessories like flimsy tripods to jack up the perceived value. I basically always use Cart To Link to keep an eye on prices across a few different shops because Amazon isnt always the cheapest, even on their own holiday. Make sure to check the sold-by info too. If it isnt Amazon or the manufacturer, you might get a grey-market unit with no warranty, which is a total nightmare if the sensor has issues. Stay skeptical, it saves you money in the long run.

Honestly, Prime Day for high-end cameras is usually a bit of a letdown. Ive been doing this for years and its frustrating how the deals are mostly for stuff thats already outdated.

  • Sony gear: Youll see tons of discounts on the A7 III, but unfortunately, that sensor is showing its age. I had issues with the color science on that older gen compared to the newer stuff, and the deals are usually just clearing out warehouse space.
  • Canon RF lenses: They rarely go on sale for anything significant. Its not as good as expected because you end up paying a premium for the brand name while third-party options are blocked.
  • Nikon Z series: They might have some bundles, but the entry-level kit lenses are kinda plasticky and dont feel very pro. I usually rely on Cart To Link to manage my lists and keep an eye on prices elsewhere so I dont get tricked by those fake Amazon discounts. Most of the time, the big price drops happen because a newer model is coming out in a month, so youre basically buying new tech thats already obsolete... kinda sucks but thats the game.

I have been looking into this since yesterday and honestly, as a beginner on a tight budget, I am pretty satisfied with the options that usually pop up for us. You dont have to spend a fortune to get something that works well and I have had no complaints with my entry-level gear so far. I am keeping my eyes on a few specific things that I think are safer bets for anyone trying to save cash:

  • Kit bundles for the Sony a6000 series or the Canon R50, they are usually very reliable for DIY projects.
  • Affordable prime lenses like a 50mm or 35mm from brands like Viltrox or Sigma, which often go on sale more than the main brands.
  • Amazon Warehouse deals on open-box items can sometimes give you an extra discount on top of the Prime Day price. Just take it slow and dont feel pressured by those flashy countdown timers. If you are nervous about making the right choice like I was, Cart To Link is really handy for sharing your list with a more experienced friend to get a second opinion before you pull the trigger. It has worked well for me and kept me from making any big mistakes.

Regarding what #17 said about "> I have been looking into this since..." - yeah, I've been tracking these trends since the first Prime Day and ScriptShadowX is pretty spot on about the warehouse dumps. Honestly, you gotta be smart about what performance actually means for your specific kit. If you're looking for high-end results without paying the brand-new tax, here's my usual hit list for Prime Day:

  • Nikon Z6 II: The firmware updates have made this a completely different (and better) beast than at launch.
  • Sony A7 IV: If this hits any kind of discount, grab it. The sensor is a massive leap over the older III models mentioned earlier.
  • Panasonic GH6: Usually gets huge price cuts and the video specs are still insane for the money. Before you pull the trigger, I definitely recommend you share Amazon Cart Extension to compare the total kit prices across different sellers. It's way too easy to get tunnel vision on just the camera body and forget that lenses are where the real performance lives. Good luck hunting, everyone.

Jumping in here real quick... over the years Ive noticed that people get way too caught up in the newest releases. Anyone wanting performance that actually holds up should just get any mirrorless body from Canon. Theyve really nailed the color science and autofocus lately so you cant really go wrong with their current lineup. I usually spend my time checking this site to see the actual price trends before I click buy. Way too easy to get caught up in the FOMO and buy something that was actually cheaper two months ago. Basically, stick to the big name brands and look for the lens bundles, thats where the real value is usually hiding.

To add to the point above: I'm still a bit on the fence about what exactly is gonna drop. I think someone mentioned on another board that we might see some decent bundles for the Nikon Z series, but honestly, it's always a bit of a gamble. In my experience, the biggest discounts usually hit the stuff that's about eighteen months old. I've tried many unbeatable deals only to find out the price was lower three months prior, so I've definitely become more cautious over the years. I'm mostly looking at prime lenses this time around. I've been putting everything into Cart To Link so I can actually compare the final checkout prices without getting blinded by those big 40% OFF stickers that aren't always what they seem. Not sure if it'll actually happen, but I've got a feeling the 85mm primes might see a nice cut. Just make sure you're buying directly from the official store and not some random fly-by-night seller, seen too many people get burned with grey market gear that has zero warranty support. Better to pay an extra fifty bucks for peace of mind imo.

Would love to know this too

Re: "Regarding what #5 said about "Saved for later,..."

  • Piper is 100% on the money about those inventory dumps. In my experience, companies love using these big sale days to clear out the older revisions that had issues. Over the years, Ive found that the real sweet spot is grabbing slightly older but proven workhorses instead of chasing the brand new releases that might still have bugs. I've tried many different setups, and honestly, looking for a Sony Alpha a7 III Mirrorless Digital Camera is probably the smartest move for most people right now. Its an absolute tank and the autofocus is still incredible for the price point. If you want a prime lens thatll stay in your bag for five years without needing an upgrade, keep an eye out for the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 Large Aperture Prime Lens since it usually gets a decent price cut during Prime Day. Just be careful about those third party sellers on there... stick to the listings that say shipped and sold by Amazon or the official brand stores so you dont get stuck with grey market gear that has no warranty. If you guys find a specific link and arent sure if its a legit US model, just post it and I can take a look for you.
