I'm honestly so fed up with my current Feelworld monitor because it keeps flickering and losing the HDMI signal right in the middle of a take and it's driving me insane. I’m shooting a wedding in Seattle in like two weeks and I’m genuinely terrified my gear is gonna fail me during the ceremony. My logic was that a cheaper monitor would be fine for just framing but the colors are so off compared to what my A7SIII shows and the lag is making it impossible to pull focus manually. So I was thinking about maybe upgrading to an Atomos Ninja but then I heard they get really hot and the fan noise might be a problem for my audio setup. Or maybe the Portkeys? I just need something that actually communicates well with the Sony ecosystem without needing constant restarts. My budget is around 500 dollars maybe a bit more if it really solves the problem but I cant keep dealing with this flickering garbage anymore its making me look like an amateur in front of clients. Does anyone have a specific model that stays connected through the micro HDMI without issues or do I need to buy a specific brand of cable too? I'm just so stressed about this wedding...

Had a bit more time to think on this. I actually ditched my old gear for a Portkeys unit about six months ago and honestly, been really happy with the reliability so far. Since you're shooting weddings, visibility in direct sun is probably a bigger deal than the recording features of a Ninja anyway. Especially when you're trying to keep the budget under that 500 mark. I switched over to the Portkeys LH5P II 5.5 Inch 2200nit Camera Control Monitor and it basically solved those disconnect issues. Here is why the data points matter for your Sony setup:

  • 2200 nits brightness is a total lifesaver for outdoor ceremonies where the A7SIII screen just washes out completely.
  • It has built-in camera control via Bluetooth, so you can actually trigger recording or change settings on the Sony without touching the body.
  • The calibration data is solid right out of the box, way better than the cheaper brands that lean too green or magenta. Regarding the flickering, Micro HDMI is the absolute worst design ever for pro video. You really need a dedicated cable with some serious strain relief. I personally use the SmallRig Ultra Slim 4K HDMI Cable 35cm 2956 because the connectors are way tighter than the generic ones. Also, consider getting the SmallRig Micro HDMI to HDMI Adapter 2232 to lock the cable to your cage. It stops the port from wiggling, which is usually what causes that signal drop you're seeing. It's a way cheaper fix than a repair bill if your internal port snaps.

I went through the same thing and honestly, you gotta grab the Atomos Ninja V 5.2 inch 4K HDMI Monitor-Recorder! It is absolutely amazing and the colors match the A7SIII perfectly. Love it so much! Quick tips for your wedding:
