So Ive been a remote dev for like six years now and Ive always sworn by my old Steelcase Leap that I got secondhand years ago, but I just moved into this tiny apartment in Chicago and I'm finally setting up a separate little creativity nook in the corner of the bedroom. I am super hyped because I actually have space for a second desk now! Its gonna be my dedicated space for music production and hobby coding away from the day job.
Only problem is my bank account is absolutely screaming after all the moving costs and that insane security deposit. Usually Id say you cant find anything decent for under 300 bucks let alone 100 but I'm determined to prove myself wrong for this secondary setup. I know the basics—I need that lumbar support to actually hit the spine right and I definitely prefer mesh so I dont get swamp back during the summer—but man, looking at Amazon and Wayfair right now is a total minefield. Its all these flashy gaming chairs that look like racing seats but have zero actual ergonomics or adjustments.
Ive been scouring the local Facebook Marketplace but everything near me is either totally gross or weirdly overpriced for what it is. I need something that wont fall apart in three months or have the gas lift cylinder give out the second I sit down. Is there like a hidden gem brand out there right now? Maybe something from IKEA or a generic brand on Staples that actually holds up? Im looking for something specifically under $100 because thats all I have left in the gear fund for this month and I really want to get this setup finished by next weekend so I can start my new project. Do those basic task chairs with the mesh backs actually provide enough support for 4-5 hours of sitting or am I just gonna wreck my neck? I'm okay with losing out on stuff like 4D armrests or seat pan depth adjustment if the core back support is solid. Anyone actually found a budget beast lately?
I have gone through so many chairs over the years and finding a budget beast is honestly a total thrill! Since you are in Chicago and specifically need that mesh back to avoid the heat, there are a few models that actually hit the mark for under a hundred bucks.
> I need something that wont fall apart in three months Like someone mentioned, I would suggest any IKEA task chair. Be careful with off-brands; IKEA offers much better reliability for budget setups.
