So I bought this Sony a6400 a few months ago because my sister is getting married in Chicago next month and I promised I would take some nice shots of the reception. I thought the camera would just handle it but I tried taking some test photos in my living room last night and they were all super blurry or just really dark and grainy. Someone told me I need a flash but when I started looking online I got so lost. Like why are there so many different kinds and why do the prices jump around so much?
I saw the Sony brand ones like the HVL something but they are so expensive like 500 dollars which is way more than I really want to spend right now after already buying the camera and a bag. My budget is probably closer to 150 or maybe 200 at the absolute most if it actually makes a huge difference in how the pictures look. Then I saw these things called Godox and Neewer on Amazon and people in the comments were saying they work with Sony but then other people were saying they dont have something called TTL or they need a special trigger thing to even fire? I have no idea what any of that means honestly. I just want something that I can slide onto the top of the camera and it just works when I press the button.
My logic was that if I buy a Sony one it will definitely work but then I saw these videos about off camera flash and now my head is spinning. Do I need a stand too? Or can I just point it at the ceiling? I heard bouncing the light is better so it doesnt look like a deer in headlights look but I dont know if the cheaper ones can even tilt their heads. Sorry if this is a total newbie question but I am starting from zero here and the wedding is coming up fast.
Is there a specific model that is basically plug and play for a beginner that wont break the bank? Or should I just bite the bullet and save for the official Sony one? I really dont want to ruin my sisters big day because I bought a cheap piece of junk that doesnt sync up with the shutter right...
Stumbled upon this post and man, I feel your pain. The struggle is real when you're starting out. Honestly, those ultra-cheap manual flashes like the Neewer TT560 Manual Speedlite were a total disaster for me. Photos ended up either pitch black or way too bright because manual settings are basically impossible to manage when people are dancing around. It was super disappointing to see those results after the fact, and I definitely missed some key moments because I was busy fiddling with the gear. You 100% need TTL (Through The Lens) for a wedding reception. It is essentially an auto mode where the camera and flash talk to each other to figure out the right brightness. Without it, you're gonna be guessing all night. Since your budget is 200 dollars, please dont waste your money on the official Sony brand stuff. It is way overpriced for what you actually get. A solid alternative that I use now is the Godox V860III-S TTL Li-ion Flash for Sony because it has a rechargeable battery that lasts all night. If you want to save a bit more cash, the Godox TT685II-S TTL Flash for Sony is nearly identical but runs on AA batteries instead. Just slide it onto your a6400, set it to TTL, and bounce the light off the ceiling. It makes the lighting look soft and natural instead of that harsh deer in headlights vibe you mentioned. You have got this, just give yourself a few days to practice before the big day.
Unfortunately my Sony gear had terrible thermal management and it sucked when it died mid-wedding. Grabbed the Godox V1-S Round Head TTL Flash instead. Recycle times and TTL accuracy are way better tho.
