Finally pulled the trigger on the a7iv after shooting with my old dslr for basically a decade and honestly Im kinda panicking. I thought I knew what I was doing but the mirrorless world feels so different and I feel like I'm missing half the stuff I actually need to make this thing work for a real shoot. I've got a wedding coming up in about three weeks here in damp Portland and I just realized my old bags and filters dont really fit the new glass I picked up because the diameters are all different.
I spent most of my budget on the body and the 24-70 GM II so I've got maybe $400 or $500 left to get the essentials and I'm stressed about picking the wrong things. Do I really need those super expensive V90 cards for 4k video or can I get away with V60s? I've heard the batteries are better than the old Sony ones but should I buy like four of them? Also the sensor is so exposed when changing lenses compared to my old rig it's making me nervous as hell, I'm already seeing little spots in my test shots.
I've been looking at peak design straps because the one in the box is just... not great for my neck during long days. And what about screen protectors? Are they actually necessary or just another upsell? I also keep seeing people talk about smallrig cages but I'm not doing heavy video yet so I dont know if that's overkill for now. I just dont want to get to the venue and realize I forgot some stupid adapter or a specific type of cleaning kit because these mirrorless sensors attract dust like crazy.
If you guys were setting up a fresh Sony kit from scratch today for professional-ish work what are the absolute non-negotiables you'd buy first? I'm trying to stay under that $500 limit if possible but I can stretch it if it's for something that'll save my life during the ceremony. Just feeling a bit out of my depth with the new ecosystem even though I've been shooting for years...
Adding my perspective on your setup since I just went through this transition myself last year. Like someone mentioned, you definitely need a solid strap for long wedding days. I am very satisfied with how the Peak Design Slide Camera Strap Black handles the weight of the a7iv and that heavy GM glass. It is incredibly secure and the quick-connect system is a lifesaver when you need to switch to a tripod or gimbal quickly. For the dust issue, a blower works for loose particles, but for those stubborn spots you're seeing, you'll want a proper wet cleaning kit. I recommend these additions to stay under your budget:
> what are the absolute non-negotiables you'd buy first? Saw this earlier... tbh just grab the Sony PCK-LG1 Screen Protector and a Giottos Rocket Air Blaster Large. Both are budget-friendly, work well, and keep that sensor clean without much effort.
V60 cards are totally fine for almost everything on the a7iv unless you are shooting heavy slow motion. I use the ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 256GB Gold and its plenty fast for weddings. Grabbing just one extra Sony NP-FZ100 Z-series Battery should be enough since the life is solid. You got this... just keep a simple blower in your bag for that sensor dust.
