Which gimbal are you guys actually using with your Sony Alpha setups these days? I am stuck between getting the DJI RS3 or the Zhiyun Crane 4 and honestly I keep switching my mind every five minutes. I have a wedding shoot coming up in Chicago in about three weeks so I need to make a move fast but I am worried about the weight since I am usually rocking the A7IV with the 24-70mm GM II lens. That glass is not exactly light and my old Ronin S is basically a paperweight now because the motors just cant keep up anymore.
I am leaning toward the RS3 because of those automatic axis locks which seem amazing for moving between locations quickly but then I see the Crane 4 has that sling grip included and a higher payload capacity for a better price. My budget is capped at 550 so I cant really swing for the Pro versions of either. Is the DJI ecosystem really worth the extra money for a Sony user or is the Zhiyun just as good for someone who is on their feet for 10 hours straight? I just dont want to regret the purchase halfway through the reception because the balance is off or the software is buggy...
> I am leaning toward the RS3 because of those automatic axis locks which seem amazing for moving between locations quickly I went through this exact same dilemma last year and ended up grabbing the DJI RS3 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer. Honestly I have been so satisfied with how it works with my Sony setup. I did an 11-hour wedding shoot in October and those auto-locks were a total game changer for me. I was constantly jumping from the bridal suite to the ceremony site and not having to manually lock every axis saved my sanity and my gear. The Zhiyun Crane 4 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal is a beast for sure but for the price the DJI ecosystem just feels more reliable when you are under pressure. I have had zero issues with the Bluetooth shutter on my A7IV too which is a nice bonus. Quick tip: calibrate the motors every single time you change your focal length on that 24-70mm. It keeps the motors from working overtime and saves a ton of battery life during long days.
If you are doing 10-hour wedding days with that heavy GM II glass, look at the DJI RS 4 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer. It fits your budget. Those Teflon-coated arms make balancing that lens much smoother than on the Crane. Native Bluetooth shutter integration with Sony beats using cables. If you want something lighter so your back doesnt hurt, the Zhiyun Weebill 3S Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer is another solid choice.
Would love to know this too
> I just dont want to regret the purchase halfway through the reception because the balance is off or the software is buggy... Honestly, I had a situation last summer where my gimbal motors started vibrating uncontrollably about six hours into a shoot. It was a nightmare trying to recalibrate while the couple was cutting the cake. What I learned from that experience is that build quality and motor reliability are way more important than having the most features. I eventually moved to a more robust system that handles my heavy glass without any issues. The peace of mind knowing the software wont glitch out is huge. Even if a unit is a bit heavier, I find that if the balance stays true throughout the day, it actually saves my back more than a lighter one that I have to keep fighting with. Just something to keep in mind for those long Chicago wedding days.
