@Reply #4 - good point! honestly im right there with you on the heat concerns. everyone keeps pushing for bigger sensors but i just want a camera that doesnt die on me during a long summer ride. the current DJI Osmo Action 4 4K Action Camera is a beast precisely because it stays cool and reliable. if they jump to a 1-inch sensor it might end up bulky like the Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch Edition which was a bit of a brick compared to the standard ones. id rather see dji focus on stuff that actually matters for reliability:

  • better bitrates for color grading - improved low light without the extra heat - keeping the same battery life we get now ive seen the GoPro HERO12 Black struggle with overheating in high-res modes and its super frustrating. i really hope dji stays conservative enough that the action 5 is still a tank. a reliable tool is always better than a fancy paperweight that shuts down after ten minutes of filming... ngl id be fine with the same sensor if they just bumped the software side.

Late to the party but I am actually a bit cautious about everyone wanting a 1 inch sensor in the Action 5. If they actually pull it off, we gotta be careful about the thermal limits because bigger sensors run hot as heck in these tiny sealed cases. Are you mostly looking for that better low-light performance or are you just wanting a shallower depth of field? A few things I would be worried about:

  • thermal throttling during long 4K sessions
  • minimum focus distance issues
  • lens weight making it less durable for drops I would suggest keeping expectations in check because I would hate to see it sacrifice reliability just to win the spec war. What kind of environments are you mostly planning to film in?

The release date is expected in September 2024. I also hope it will feature 1 inch sensor.
