Finally pulled the trigger on an R5 for a trip to Costa Rica next month and wow my bank account is hurting lol. Ive got about 800 bucks left for accessories and Im totally lost on what is actually essential. I saw people arguing about CFexpress cards - some say go ProGrade but then others swear by Delkin and the price difference is weirdly big so Im confused there. Also the battery situation... I read it dies super fast but do I really need to spend 80 bucks a pop for the official Canon ones? Third party ones apparently give people error codes or something.

  • Need it for wildlife mostly
  • Only got 800ish left to spend
  • Need at least one big card and a spare battery

What else is actually a must before I head out into the jungle?...

Honestly, its kind of a letdown how much extra gear you need to actually make the R5 shine for wildlife. That 800 bucks is gonna feel real small real fast. CFexpress cards are a total headache. Most people buy the cheap ones and then wonder why their buffer hangs after 2 seconds of shooting birds.

  • ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B Cobalt 325GB is technically the best because of the high sustained write speeds, but its priced like a luxury car. Unfortunately, its the only way to guarantee zero lag during 20fps bursts.
  • Delkin Devices Black CFexpress Type B 512GB is what I usually recommend instead. Its super rugged for the humidity youll face in Costa Rica and usually cheaper per GB while still hitting those fast sustained speeds you need. Its not quite as fast as the Cobalt for long video, but for wildlife stills, it hits the mark. Regarding batteries, unfortunately the 3rd party ones are mostly trash for the R5. If you dont use the official Canon LP-E6NH Li-ion Battery, the camera often disables the high-speed mechanical shutter mode (the green H+ icon). I tried the SmallRig LP-E6NH USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery and while the built-in USB-C port is super handy for charging off a power bank in the field, it just doesnt hold the peak voltage as long as the Canon ones do. Id say grab the 512GB Delkin and at least two genuine Canon batteries. Youll be cutting it close on the budget but skipping out on the OEM power is a mistake youll regret when your frame rate suddenly drops right as a quetzal takes flight...
