I just dropped a ton on the R6 and now I'm looking at accessories and honestly getting a headache. I read that the EF-RF control ring adapter is mandatory but then some people say native RF glass is the only way to get the real performance so I'm stuck. My logic was the adapter saves money but if it slows down the autofocus what's the point?
Also batteries are confusing. People say only the new LP-E6NH works for the fast frame rates but I have old spares from my 5D. I've got a wedding shoot in Seattle next month and only like 350 bucks left. What are the actual essentials I need right now vs what can wait...
> if it slows down the autofocus what's the point? The adapter is just a hollow tube with pins, so AF speed is pretty much identical to native glass tho. Since you're shooting a wedding, grab a Godox V1-C Flash for Canon instead of the pricey Canon stuff. Its reliable and recycles fast. Also, get a Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap Black so you dont drop that new rig while you're working the crowd in Seattle.
Unfortunately, the R6 is a bit of a power hog and those old 5D batteries just wont let you hit the 12fps mechanical burst rate. Its really frustrating that you have to buy the Canon LP-E6NH High Capacity Lithium-Ion Battery to unlock the full specs, but thats the reality of the new DIGIC X processor demand. Honestly, the battery life is not as good as expected for a body at this price point. For that wedding in Seattle, you definitely need at least two of the newer ones to be safe. As for the glass, dont worry about performance drops with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. It has no optical elements, so the AF speed stays native... sadly, some people spread misinformation about lag. You can skip the control ring version to save cash right now. Spend the leftover money on a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-II SDXC because the R6 buffer fills up fast. Youll do great, just keep an eye on that power meter.
Saw this earlier and had to jump in! @Reply #1 - good point! The R6 is definitely a power hog so you need those batteries, but dont forget the storage side. Since you are doing a wedding in Seattle, you absolutely need to utilize both slots for redundancy or you are basically asking for a heart attack. Honestly, ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold 128GB cards are fantastic and I like them way more than the Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB SDXC UHS-II lately. ProGrade is just more reliable in my experience and they dont fall apart like some of the older Lexar casings did. UHS-II is amazing because it clears that buffer instantly when you are shooting the kiss or the processional! Using slow cards makes the camera lag while you miss the next moment... its painful. Also, since Seattle is basically a swamp, grab a Think Tank Photo Emergency Rain Cover Medium... it is way better than a plastic bag and looks way more professional. You can totally snag two cards and the cover and stay under that 350 budget!

Been thinking about your situation and tbh it's kinda disappointing how much extra cash it takes to get an R6 ready for a pro gig. I had issues with gear failing in the past so I'm always super paranoid now. Not sure but IIRC, those older batteries might actually cause the camera to lag or lock up during heavy use, which would be a total disaster at a wedding. Seattle is basically guaranteed to be wet too. Unfortunately, the weather sealing on these new bodies isnt as good as expected compared to the old 5D series. You really gotta spend some of that remaining money on a decent rain cover. Spending your last few bucks on plastic protection basically sucks, but I've heard too many horror stories about moisture killing these sensors... just dont risk it.
Seriously, I have been dealing with this exact same mess for like two months now and honestly still havent found a solid answer that doesnt cost a fortune. It is super frustrating that we spend this much on a body and then everything else feels like a hidden tax. Unfortunately, I have had issues with my older batteries failing to hit the green H+ icon too, and it is making me super paranoid for my upcoming gigs.
