honestly im so over my current setup its actually driving me crazy. ive been using the godox v860iii on my a7iv for a while now but it is just way too big and heavy for what i do. every time i let the camera hang on my side the whole thing just flips upside down because the flash is so top heavy and i feel like im gonna snap the hot shoe off one of these days. plus it just looks ridiculous when im trying to be low key at small events. i have a wedding coming up in seattle in about three weeks and im panicking because i really dont want to haul this brick around all day. i tried that tiny sony hvl-f20m but it feels like a toy and the recycle time is honestly a joke i missed so many shots. im looking for something that is actually small but still has decent power maybe around 150 to 250 bucks? i just need something that wont make my wrist ache after an hour and doesn't take forever to fire again. what are you guys using for a compact flash on the a7 series that actually works well?

In my experience, the best balance between size and reliability for the a7 series is the Godox V350S TTL Li-ion Flash. I have used many flashes over the years and most compact units are underpowered or rely on AA batteries which are just too slow for wedding work. The V350S uses a dedicated lithium battery pack so the recycle times are actually usable for fast-paced events. You are right to worry about the hot shoe. I have seen mounts bend from those top-heavy V860 units putting too much torque on the frame. This unit is significantly lighter and wont make your setup flip over while walking. One tip: always double check that the locking wheel is tight because smaller flashes can sometimes wiggle more. Tbh it is the only small flash I trust for paid gigs where you cant afford to wait for a recycle beep.

^ This. Also, while the V350 is a common choice, I politely disagree that it is the most reliable option for a wedding environment where build quality is paramount! I always worry about the stress on the hot shoe with heavier units. I am absolutely obsessed with the Sony HVL-F28RM Compact External Flash for professional work. It is incredible how they fit a durable metal foot and weather sealing into such a small body!!

  • Sony HVL-F28RM Compact External Flash: Amazing integration with camera face detection and very secure on the hot shoe. The recycle time is much faster than the basic 20 series.
  • Nissin i40 for Sony Mirrorless: I love the physical dials for quick changes. It is very compact but feels significantly more robust than a toy. The Sony unit is fantastic because it balances power and safety perfectly. It wont feel flimsy at all and the metal mount is so much safer for your a7iv hot shoe long-term!
