I've been shooting with the A7C for a year now but my old VideoMic Go is suddenly giving me crazy hiss in the preamps. I've got a wedding gig in Portland next Saturday and I'm panicking about the audio quality. Whats the best shotgun or compact mic for this body that wont break my $300 budget?

tbh that hiss is usually just the cable dying or the gain being set too high on the camera. if you want something super reliable for a wedding, i always tell people to stick with the native stuff. the Sony ECM-B10 Compact Shotgun Microphone is probably your safest bet since it uses the digital interface on your shoe. no cables to trip over or wiggle loose, which is one less thing to stress about in portland. it should be around $250. another decent option is the Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Analog/USB Microphone if you like having a physical knob for gain control. its roughly $240 usually. just keep your camera levels low and let the mic do the heavy lifting. whatever you pick, just grab it soon so you can run a few tests at home first. good luck with the gig, weddings are stressful enough without audio drama...
