I just got a Sony A6400 for a trip to the Grand Canyon next month but honestly I have no idea where to start with gear. Im kinda scared of the camera falling over or being too heavy for a cheap stand. My budget is like 75 bucks max. Sorry if this is a dumb question but what are some good budget tripods for this camera?

Regarding what #1 said about wind, I've seen gear fly away before. In my experience, the Neewer 70-inch Aluminum Alloy Tripod Monopod is super reliable and wont break the bank.

Unfortunately I've had cheap ball heads slip on me mid-shot before. It's a nightmare. Try SmallRig Selection 78 inch Lightweight Camera Tripod unless you like watching your camera slowly faceplant.

im still kinda new to this myself but ive already learned my lesson the hard way. i had a tripod leg just... give up on me while i was out in the woods and my a6400 almost ended up in a creek. it was terrifying. honestly i would suggest being super cautious about the weight ratings they put on the box because they always lie.

  • you might want to consider just getting any aluminum kit from Vanguard
  • make sure to look at the basic compact lines from Manfrotto
  • benro also makes some decent stuff that feels way sturdier than the cheapo brands just be careful with the ball heads on the really cheap ones tho. ive noticed they tend to droop after a few minutes of shooting. id personally go with a trusted brand even if it's their cheapest option because losing a camera at the grand canyon would be a total nightmare.

In my experience, the wind at the Grand Canyon can be brutal, so you really need something with a weight hook and sturdy aluminum legs. I've tried many budget stands over the years and the plastic ones usually vibrate too much or just feel flimsy under a real camera body like the A6400. You want a tripod that offers a secure locking mechanism so you aren't constantly worried about it tipping over.

Bump - same question here

ngl im in the exact same boat as you, just got my a6400 and ive been super satisfied with the camera itself but the thought of a gust of wind taking it out gives me major anxiety lol. i spent forever looking for something reliable that wont fail me. i actually ended up watching a bunch of comparison videos because i was so worried about the legs buckling or something. honestly just search 'best budget tripod for a6400' on youtube or check out the sony subreddit... there are some really deep dives there that show exactly how they hold up. i found a really solid guide that way and it saved me so much stress, definitely worth the five minutes to look it up so you can see them in action.
