I just got a Sony mirrorless for my trip to Japan in two weeks and I have zero clue how to pick a tripod. I was looking online and got totally overwhelmed because the prices are all over the place. My logic was that a tripod is just three legs so why are some like 500 dollars? I dont want my camera to fall over but my budget is really only 150 max. I saw some carbon fiber ones but is that actually better or just a fancy way to charge more? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just dont want to buy the wrong thing and have it break mid-hike. What should I actually be looking for?
Re: "Honestly, picking a tripod is a total nightmare..."
Honestly, picking a tripod is a total nightmare when you are first starting out. I spent years buying the wrong ones before I finally understood why those $500 ones exist... it is basically just weight savings and better vibration damping. But for a trip to Japan, you definitely do not need to drop half a grand. Aluminum is gonna be your best friend on this budget. Carbon fiber is lighter, yeah, but cheap carbon fiber can actually be way more brittle than decent aluminum if it gets knocked around. Be careful with those super cheap ones on Amazon that look like they are made of soda cans. They will vibrate like crazy in a light breeze and your photos will come out blurry anyway. I would suggest looking at these:
@Reply #2 - good point! Lens weight is everything. Unfortunately, many budget tripods are disappointing and exhibit serious stability issues. Leg locks often fail during hikes, which is just the worst... Honestly, dont trust a cheap head with expensive gear.
