So I finally upgraded my old gear and got the Sony A7IV and I am literally so hyped to start doing more portrait work! My best friend actually asked me to shoot her engagement party in Austin next month and it is gonna be outdoors at sunset so I know I am gonna need some serious lighting help once the sun goes down.

I have been looking at the Godox V1 because everyone on YouTube says the round head makes the light look so much softer and the price is honestly great for my $450 budget. But then I saw some pros on a different thread complaining about Godox having weird connection issues with the Sony multi-interface shoe and they were swearing by the Sony HVL-F60RM2 instead. The Sony one is like way more expensive though and I dont know if that official brand tax is actually worth it for someone like me or if the Godox is actually reliable enough for a live event where I cant really redo the shots.

I also looked into the Westcott FJ80 II but now I am just getting overwhelmed with all the different battery types and triggers.

  • Does the round head actually make a difference for portraits?
  • Is the Sony brand flash worth double the price of a Godox?
  • Any issues with overheating during long shoots?

I really need something that wont fail on me while I am trying to capture the toasts and everything...

Stumbled on this. Unfortunately, my Godox AD200Pro TTL Pocket Flash was not as good as expected for moving fast at events. Are you using a light stand? Tip: always bring a backup flash.

Listen, the Sony hot shoe is notoriously fragile, so you gotta be careful no matter what you buy. People complain about Godox because the older plastic feet would snap or wiggle, but the newer Godox V1-S Round Head Flash for Sony units usually ship with the metal reinforced version now. Just double check that before you buy. Honestly, spending double on the Sony HVL-F60RM2 High-Speed Flash is a tough sell when you're just starting out. That official brand tax is real. I've used both and the Sony is definitely more reliable for heavy professional use, but for an engagement party? The Godox is fine if you treat it right. About that round head... it's mostly hype. A small light source is a small light source. It wont magically make light soft like a softbox will, but it does have a nicer falloff. The real benefit is the magnetic mount for the Godox AK-R1 Accessory Kit. It makes swapping diffusers way faster during a live event. Just watch your recycle times. If you start firing at full power constantly, any of these will overheat eventually. I would suggest keeping an eye on the temp bar and maybe grabbing an extra Godox VB26A Rechargeable Lithium Battery so you aren't stuck waiting for a charge. If you really want to save cash, the Godox V860III-S TTL Flash for Sony is basically the same power but cheaper because it's square. Put the savings toward a decent light stand or a small softbox if you really want that soft portrait look.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I have learned the hard way that reliability is everything for events. In my experience, the cheaper third-party ones I used to run would randomly lose TTL connection right when the toasts started... total nightmare. I switched to my current setup because the foot is just way more stable. TL;DR: Pay the brand tax for peace of mind. You dont want to miss a shot.
