Ive been going down a total rabbit hole trying to pick a flash for my a6400 and I honestly cant decide what makes the most sense for such a small camera body. I have a cousins wedding coming up in about three weeks in Seattle and I really need to get something ordered by Friday so I can actually practice using it before the big day. The a6400 is so compact that I dont want something that makes the whole rig tip over but I also need decent power for a dim reception hall.
Im basically torn between these three right now:
My budget is strictly under $250 and I really need something that does TTL well because I am not fast enough to shoot full manual while people are dancing and moving around. Is the V860III just way too big for a6400 users or is the weight worth it for the battery? Or is there a middle ground I'm missing...
Over the years, Ive found Godox V350S Li-ion Camera Flash is the sweet spot.
I definitely agree that sticking to a smaller flash is the right call for that body. If you want to stay under budget but get better results, grab a Godox X2T-S TTL Wireless Flash Trigger as well. It lets you hold the flash off-camera for better angles without the weight tipping your rig over. Its a lifesaver for those dim reception shots where direct flash looks too flat.
Honestly, I would be really cautious about taking the Godox TT350S Mini Flash for Sony to a wedding reception. I’ve used it on my a6000 series bodies and while it’s cute, those two AA batteries are gonna let you down when the dancing starts. Youll spend half the night waiting for the recycle beep and missing shots. Plus, in a dim hall, you might end up pushing it to full power which drains those AAs in no time. You should definitely look at the Godox V350S Li-ion TTL Flash for Sony instead. It’s the exact same size as the TT350 but it uses a lithium-ion battery pack. This is basically the middle ground you’re hunting for. It recycles way faster and youll easily get through a whole wedding on one charge. It fits the a6400 perfectly without making it feel like it’s gonna snap in half. I’d stay away from the Godox V860III-S TTL Li-ion Flash for this specific camera. It’s a fantastic unit, but its basically a brick sitting on a pancake. Be careful with those larger flashes on the a6400 because the hot shoe mount isn't the most reinforced thing in the world... I’ve seen people wiggle them loose. If you do go big, make sure you're holding the setup by the lens or the flash body, not just the camera grip. Regarding the Sony HVL-F28RM External Flash, it's way overpriced for what it is. You’re paying for the name but getting less power and fewer features than the Godox stuff. Stick with the V350S and maybe grab a Godox AK-R11 Dome Diffuser to help soften that light up.
Just saw this thread. Unfortunately, finding a reliable balance between thermal management and size on the a6400 is a real chore. Ive had issues with smaller units like the 350 series failing to keep up with the recycle demands of a wedding reception. If you want something that actually performs without being as massive as the V860, the Nissin i60A Flash for Sony is technically a better fit for the power-to-size ratio. It hits a GN60 which is what you actually need for bouncing light in a dim hall. Another route is the Godox V1-S Round Head Flash. It is the only other unit I really trust for TTL consistency, even if it makes the a6400 feel like a toy attached to a brick. Honestly, the a6400 hot shoe is pretty fragile, and putting a massive flash on it without a bracket often leads to mount wiggle or connection drops. Its a frustrating compromise, but for a wedding, Id prioritize the lithium recycle speed over the ergonomics every single time.
