honestly im so done with the kit lens that came with my a6400. i was trying to film some stuff at a local market yesterday and everything looked like garbage because it was so dark and the focus kept hunting like crazy. im going to tokyo in like 20 days and i cant deal with this lens anymore i need something that actually works for video.

ive heard people talk about sigma a lot but i cant decide between the 16mm or the 18-50mm zoom. is the zoom sharp enough for vlogging or should i stick with a fast prime for low light? i dont want to spend over 500 bucks though...

honestly i was in the same boat with my a6400 until i grabbed the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary. i took it on a trip to nyc last winter and it was basically the only lens i needed. i used to think i needed the f/1.4 of the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for low light, but that lens is actually pretty bulky for travel and vlogging. the 18-50mm is so tiny and the f/2.8 constant aperture is a massive upgrade over that kit lens junk. the af is super sticky too, no hunting at all. i was really satisfied with how it handled dark alleyways and neon signs... you get that flexibility to zoom in for b-roll without swapping lenses every five minutes. for under 500 bucks its the best choice imo.

Just saw this thread today. In my experience, the technical trade-off here is basically light transmission vs focal flexibility. Before deciding, are you prioritizing those low-light night markets or daytime street scenes? If you need the speed, the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is the play. You can find it used for under $300, which leaves plenty of cash for accessories.

^ This. Also, be careful about the lack of stabilization. The a6400 doesnt have IBIS, and the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary lacks OSS, so your vlogs might get jittery. I would suggest:

Same setup here, love it

In my experience, gear reliability is everything when you are traveling, which is why I have been dealing with this exact same headache for like three weeks now. Im also trying to gear up for a trip with my Sony a6400 and I have been living on the DPReview forums trying to find a solution, but I am still totally stuck between those two options. It is honestly so frustrating because I just want to know my setup wont fail me when I am halfway across the world and the kit lens is clearly not it.
