So Ive been shooting on my a6400 for like three years now mostly with the kit lens and some vintage Takumars but I finally realized they just arent fast enough for what I need. Im headed to Tokyo in ten days and I need a prime that can actually keep up with the autofocus for street stuff. Im stuck between the Sigma 16mm f1.4 and the 30mm. I know the 16 is super sharp but is it gonna look too wide for candid shots of people? Or should I just go with the 30mm for that more natural 45mm equivalent look. I only got like 350 bucks to spend and need to order it by tomorrow to get it in time for my flight. Which one is gonna be more versatile for those crowded neon streets?
Just saw this and wanted to chime in before you buy. You might want to consider the Sigma 23mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E instead of the two you're looking at. I've shot in Tokyo plenty and 16mm is honestly just way too wide for most street candids. You will have to get uncomfortably close to people to fill the frame, and the edge distortion on faces won't look good... it kinda stretches things out. The 23mm hits that 35mm equivalent which is basically the gold standard for street photography. It is way more natural for those crowded neon alleys. Another sleeper pick is the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary Sony E. I know you asked for a prime, but for busy places, having that flexibility is a lifesaver. Just be careful with the f2.8 at night since you will need to bump your ISO more than with the f1.4 glass. TL;DR: 23mm is the best middle ground for faces, or the 18-50mm for pure versatility.
Ive spent years lugging gear through Shinjuku and Shibuya and honestly, the 16mm is a trap for street work. Its way too wide for most candid stuff. You end up with too much clutter in the frame and have to get uncomfortably close to people to get a decent shot.
Grab the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E! The 45mm equivalent focal length is fantastic for street shots, way better than the wide Sigma 16mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E for Tokyo!
