What is the best Sigma lens for Sony A7IV portrait photography?

I just picked up the A7IV a few months ago after saving up forever and I'm finally ready to move away from the kit lens because honestly it's just not doing it for me anymore especially for portraits. I've got my sister's wedding coming up in late October and she's basically told me I'm the designated photographer for the smaller pre-wedding events which is cool but also terrifying because I dont want to mess it up. I've been looking at Sigma lenses because those Sony GM prices are honestly insane and I cant justify spending two grand on a single lens right now. My budget is more like 900 quid maybe a bit more if I stretch it.

So I was thinking about the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art because everyone online says it is the gold standard for that blurry background look but then I saw a few threads saying it can be a bit slow to focus in low light on the A7IV compared to the newer 50mm f/1.4 Art. My logic was that the 85mm would be perfect for headshots but I'm worried I'll be constantly backing into walls since some of the venues in London where we're doing the dinner are pretty cramped and tiny.

Then I saw some people raving about the 35mm f/1.2 or the f/1.4 for environmental portraits but I'm scared that might distort her face too much if I get close? I really want that professional look with the sharp eyes and the soft background but I'm stuck between these options:

  • Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art
  • Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art
  • Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art

Some reviewers say the 50mm is more versatile for all day use but then others say if you're doing portraits you HAVE to go 85mm. It's kinda driving me crazy trying to pick one. Do any of you use the 85mm Art on the A7IV specifically for events? Does it hunt much or is the eye-autofocus sticky enough to trust for a one-time event? Or should I just play it safe with the 50mm or even a zoom like the 24-70 Art even though it's only f/2.8...

The AF speed difference comes down to the motor tech. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art features the HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) which is objectively faster than the stepping motor in the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art. For a fast-moving event, hit rate is everything. Technical trade-offs for your A7IV:

  • 85mm: Incredible bokeh but the focal length is a liability in small London pubs or dinner venues.
  • 50mm: More versatile working distance and uses the newer, faster AF system.
  • 35mm: Great for environmental shots but you'll get perspective distortion on close-up headshots. I use the 50mm Art for most event work now. It balances well on the A7IV body and the eye-AF is basically glued to the subject. The 85mm is amazing for outdoor portraits where you have space, but indoors, you're gonna feel trapped. The 50mm f/1.4 is the safer bet for this role.

Jumping in here... Like someone mentioned, focus tech is a big deal, but honestly people overblow the hunting on the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art. I've shot tons of low-light receptions with that exact lens on my A7IV. The real technical hurdle you're gonna face in those cramped London venues isn't focus speed, it's the minimum focusing distance and the narrow field of view. I remember one gig in a tiny cellar bar in Soho where I had the 85mm mounted and literally had to stand in the hallway just to get a waist-up shot. It was a nightmare. If you want that creamy bokeh without the wall-backing issue, look at the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art. At f/1.4, you still get amazing separation, but you can actually capture the environment. Just dont get closer than 3 feet to her face or you'll get that perspective distortion that makes noses look huge. TL;DR: The 85mm Art is the king of portraits but a liability in small rooms. For your first big event, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art II might actually be the smarter choice for versatility tho you lose the f/1.4 look.
