Honestly im just so fed up with my current setup. Ive been using this old kit lens and a cheap prime on my A7IV and the autofocus just hunts constantly during my indoor shoots and its driving me crazy. I spent so much on the body and now I feel like the glass is totally holding me back, its just frustrating to miss shots when people are actually posing and the eye-AF just decides to quit. I have a wedding for a friend coming up in late October here in Chicago and I really need to get my act together by then so I dont ruin their big day.
So I was thinking about jumping ship to Sigma because everyone says the Art series is basically just as good as GM but half the price. My logic was that I should probably go for the 85mm 1.4 DG DN Art because everyone says thats the holy grail for portraits, but then I started overthinking it. Like, is it too tight for smaller indoor venues? I do a lot of full body shots too and I dont want to be backed up against a wall. Then I looked at the 35mm 1.4 Art and thought maybe thats more versatile for the reception, but will I get that creamy background I actually want for the couple shots?
Im stuck in this loop where I keep adding things to my cart and then deleting them because Im scared of making the wrong choice again. My budget is strictly capped at around $1100 since I still need to buy extra batteries and a better bag. I really want that sharp, professional look without the Sony tax. I also saw the 50mm 1.4 but some people say its heavy and I already have a bad back from lugging gear around all day. Its just kind of a mess in my head right now. Does anyone actually use the 85mm on the A7IV for everything or is that a mistake for a wedding environment? I need something that wont let me down when the lighting gets dim...
Unfortunately, Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art felt distorted. Check DPReview for samples.
Honestly, I've been in your shoes. A few years back at a dimly lit ballroom in Chicago, my old gear just wouldnt lock on and I felt like a total amateur. For your A7IV, you absolutely want the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art Sony E. Its the gold standard for a reason. The newer HLA motors in the DG DN line are night and day compared to those older DSLR designs. In my experience, here is why it wins:

Would love to know this too
Quick question, how big is the venue? You might want to consider your back too. Honestly, just get any Sigma prime, the wider aperture will stop that focus hunting instantly.
