Im really stressing about audio for my Sigma FP for a Seattle wedding next month. I saw people like the Rode VideoMic GO II but then I read the preamps might be weird so my logic was maybe get a battery powered one? My budget is $150 and I just dont want to mess this up...
I've shot a dozen weddings with the FP over the years. Those preamps are definitely noisy. In my experience, you need something with its own power to keep camera gain near zero.
> I've shot a dozen weddings with the FP over the years. Those preamps are definitely noisy. Regarding what #1 said about the noisy preamps... man, he isn't kidding. I learned that the hard way during a quiet indoor ceremony where the hiss sounded like a waterfall in the background. I've been shooting with the FP for years now and honestly, I'm super satisfied with the Sennheiser+MKE+400+Shotgun+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=7649-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 400 Shotgun Microphone for these situations. It has this built-in gain boost that lets you turn the camera volume way down so you dont hear that internal buzzing. It's honestly been a lifesaver for me because the build quality is solid and it fits right in your budget. Ngl, I was worried at first but the results have been great... it just works well without any complaints from my side. Weddings are kinda crazy because they're loud and then suddenly very quiet, so having a mic with a physical switch to adjust gain on the fly is basically essential. Quick tips for the big day:
> Those preamps are definitely noisy. unfortunately i have to agree. i had similar issues with the fp during a shoot last summer and it was a total letdown. the internal audio path really isnt as good as i expected for a body at this level. one small thing to keep in mind is cable shielding. i noticed that cheap thin cables pick up way more interference from guest phones at weddings which makes that preamp hiss even more noticeable. its a frustrating extra expense but it makes a massive difference in real world results.
Late to the party but this whole thread is 💯. Glad I found it.
Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything said above is spot on.
