I finally pulled the trigger on the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art for my Sony A7IV and man this thing is an absolute tank. I love the image quality but honestly im struggling so much with my old Ronin-S. It just feels like the motors are screaming every time I try to balance it especially because that lens extends when you zoom out to 70mm and it just throws the whole center of gravity off completely. I have a big wedding shoot coming up in three weeks here in Chicago and I really need to upgrade my gimbal setup before then or my wrists are gonna give out.

I have been looking at a few options but I'm really torn between the DJI RS3 Pro and the standard RS3. The Pro is obviously the beast that can handle anything but it's pushing my budget a bit since I just dropped all that cash on the lens itself. I really want to stay under $800 if I can. Then there is the Zhiyun Crane 4 which people keep saying is the real heavy lifter for these front-heavy Art lenses because of the larger payload capacity but I've always been a DJI guy and I'm worried about the learning curve or the app being buggy.

The main issue is that zoom creep and the physical length of the lens. If I balance it at 24mm it's fine until I go to 70mm and then the front motor starts vibrating like crazy. Is the RS3 Pro actually necessary just for the extra arm length and motor strength or can I get away with the regular RS3 if I just balance it in the middle of the zoom range? Or should I just bite the bullet and go with the Crane 4 because of those built-in balance indicators and the extra torque it supposedly has for chunky glass? I really need something that isnt gonna fail on me mid-ceremony because this Sigma lens is no joke weight-wise...

Building on the earlier suggestion, you really gotta look at the physical arm clearance, not just the raw payload capacity. In my experience, the DJI RS 3 Pro 3-Axis Gimbal is the move because of those extended carbon fiber arms. The standard DJI RS 3 Gimbal Stabilizer is technically strong enough, but you will constantly clip the back motor with that Sigma lens barrel when it extends to 70mm. If the Pro is too much cash, the Zhiyun Crane 4 Professional Gimbal is a beast for front-heavy setups. It has built-in balance indicators that are super helpful for quick adjustments. Quick tip tho... balance your rig at 35mm or 50mm rather than 24mm. It basically splits the weight distribution so the motors arent fighting nearly as hard at the zoom extremes. Honestly helps a ton with motor jitter during those long ceremony shots.

Unfortunately, learning the hard way sucked... balancing in the middle of the zoom range is basically a myth for weddings. It always vibrates at the worst moment. My old setup failed mid-vows and it was a total disaster.

TL;DR: Go with the stronger motors. Totally agree that lens is a beast; I switched to a higher payload setup recently and honestly feel so much safer during weddings, it’s super stable.
