Agreeing with the used route. To add to the point above: the Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG DN Art Sony E-mount works well.

  • great for group shots
  • stays within budget
  • professional results

I have been very satisfied with the performance of the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art Sony E-mount for portrait work. It works well with the A7IV autofocus system and I have no complaints regarding the edge-to-edge resolution. While the retail price is slightly higher than your budget, you can usually find a used copy for right around $800 if you check the forums. A few technical tips for your search:

  • Look for the DG DN designation. This ensures the optics are optimized for mirrorless sensors and fast eye-tracking.
  • Prioritize lenses with an 11-blade rounded diaphragm. This is what creates that smooth, circular bokeh in the background of graduation photos. The image quality is honestly exceptional. It handles chromatic aberration better than most lenses in this price bracket. Youll definitely be happy with the results for your sisters big day...

^ This. Also, check MPB for used gear. You might want to consider the Sigma 65mm f2 DG DN Contemporary Sony E-mount... just be careful about the slower f2 aperture.
