I really need to know which Sigma lens is actually the best for an X-T5 when shooting street at night because I am getting so many conflicting answers online and it is driving me crazy.

I've been looking at the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 since everyone says it is the perfect small lens for the Fuji system and the size is great for being discreet but then I see people saying f2.8 just isnt enough when you are in dark back alleys or shooting under neon signs where the shadows are super deep. I am heading to Tokyo in about three weeks so I am on a tight timeline to get this sorted and I really want to capture that blade runner vibe without my ISO hitting 12800 and making everything look like mush.

Then I looked at the Sigma 30mm f1.4 which is way faster but then I read some forums saying the autofocus is kinda hunt-y on the X-T5 specifically or that it is not as sharp as the newer Fuji primes. But the Fuji primes are way out of my budget right now since I can only spend about 500 bucks max after buying the camera body itself. I also looked at the 16mm f1.4 but that seems way too wide for street stuff unless I want to be shoved in peoples faces which I really dont want to do.

I am just frustrated because I want that Sigma value but I cant tell if:

  • The 18-50mm f2.8 is fast enough with the X-T5s IBIS
  • The 30mm f1.4 is actually reliable for moving subjects at night
  • There is some other Sigma option I am totally missing

I just want something that wont weigh me down while I am walking 20,000 steps a day but can actually handle the low light without looking terrible. Every review video I watch just shows beautiful sunny day shots which helps me exactly zero percent for what I actually need for this trip. The X-T5 is amazing but if I cant find a lens that works in the dark for under 500 dollars I am gonna be so annoyed...

Honestly, Tokyo at night is a total light hog. I would suggest being pretty careful with the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary Fuji X because even with IBIS, that f/2.8 aperture might force your ISO way higher than you'd like when subjects are moving. That 40MP sensor on the X-T5 is pretty unforgiving with noise once you push it. Heres the deal for your trip:

  • Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Fuji X: This gives you two full stops more light. The AF can be slightly twitchy in low contrast, but for street under neon, it usually grabs fine. It's surprisingly sharp.
  • Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary Fuji X: Super versatile, but honestly, f/2.8 in a dark alley is a recipe for grain. You might want to consider the prime just for the peace of mind. You dont want to get home and realize everything is mushy after walking 20,000 steps...

^ This. Also, speed is everything in those Golden Gai alleys! I grabbed the Sigma 23mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Fuji X right before my last Osaka trip and it was a total lifesaver. The AF is way snappier than the older 30mm tho. Pro tip: grab it used to stay under that 500 dollar limit. Honestly, f1.4 makes those neon signs pop like crazy and it wont let you down!

Re: Tokyo light being a hog. My fast setup saved me in Shinjuku last year.

  • froze walking people
  • kept shadows clean Honestly, speed mattered way more and didn't fail me tho...
