So I finally pulled the trigger on a GH6 for this wedding gig I have coming up in two weeks here in Chicago but man I am totally tapped out on cash after the body and lens purchase. I have maybe 400 bucks left for accessories and I am stressing. First thing is the power situation because everyone says this thing is a beast on batteries. I am torn between just buying three extra OEM batteries which is the safe bet I guess or going with a V-mount setup on a small rig.

My logic was the V-mount would last all day but then the rig gets heavy and I am doing handheld for the reception so maybe the extra batteries are better? Then there is the storage issue. I am looking at either one 512GB Lexar CFexpress Type B card or just grabbing a couple of SanDisk V60 SD cards. I want to shoot 5.7K ProRes but I dont know if the SD cards can even handle it or if I am just gonna get error messages halfway through. If I go CFexpress I have no money left for a cage or anything else. Is the CFexpress really mandatory or can I get away with the slower cards for a bit? Kinda leaning toward the batteries and SD cards just to save some cash but I dont want to regret it when the camera locks up...

ProRes 5.7K is way too heavy for SD cards so you definitely need the Lexar Professional 512GB CFexpress Type B Gold Series. For power, the Panasonic DMW-BLK22 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery is the reliable way to go. V-mounts are great for runtime but adding that weight for a long wedding is a pain. Better to stay light and swap batteries when you can.

Honestly, dont blow your whole budget on CFexpress cards. In my experience, grabbing a Samsung T7 Shield 1TB Portable SSD is the best way to handle ProRes without breaking the bank. For power, the SmallRig DMW-BLK22 USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery is a total lifesaver since they charge via USB. This leaves enough cash for a SmallRig GH6 Black Mamba Cage so you can actually mount the drive and keep it secure.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I was in a similar spot last year and honestly, I went the super conservative route. I’ve seen people use the SSDs but I was always terrified the USB-C port would get damaged or the cable would just pop out mid-vow. Not sure if that’s a legit fear or just me being paranoid, but I ended up biting the bullet on some high-speed internal cards. It felt safer having everything tucked inside the door where I couldnt bump it. For the power, I actually messed around with a high-capacity power bank in my pocket connected via USB-C. It worked okay, but I think the cable was kinda annoying during fast movements. Someone told me those third-party batteries can sometimes cause weird firmware glitches too, so I just stuck with the official ones. I’m satisfied with the choice even though it was pricey... there’s just something about knowing the gear wont quit on you when the pressure is on.
