I finally pulled the trigger on a Nikon D850 and im so pumped to use it for my cousins wedding next month in Chicago. I need a solid flash because the venue is basically a cave. I keep seeing the Nikon SB-5000 recommended everywhere but man its pricey and the whole radio control thing looks confusing as heck to set up.

Then I see the Godox V1 being hyped up for its round head and price tag but some pros say it feels cheap or might miss fire. Im torn between going official Nikon or saving some cash with Godox. Which external flash do you guys think actually plays best with the D850 for a fast-paced event?

Just catching up here. Tbh, ive been super satisfied with my setup lately. The D850 works well with these:

  • Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight: The 2.4 GHz radio control is awesome for cave-like venues.
  • Godox V1-N TTL Flash: I love the 76Ws output and fast 1.5s recycle time. Check out FlashHavoc for more technical teardowns on recycle speeds. No complaints from my side!

Honestly, ive had issues with both lately. The Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight is technically superior for heat dissipation during bursts, but the interface is unfortunately archaic for such an expensive unit. Nikon really hasnt innovated here. My experience with the Godox V1-N TTL Flash for Nikon was not as good as expected regarding recycle stability under heavy load either. It occasionally overheats if youre firing rapid sequences at a wedding.

  • Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight: Best thermal management and cooling, but the menu is a mess for the price.
  • Godox V1-N TTL Flash for Nikon: Great light falloff from the round head, tho the plastic build feels a bit cheap.
  • Godox V860III-N TTL Flash for Nikon: Technically more reliable than the V1 in some tests, but lacks the round head. If you want the most stable TTL integration with the D850, the Nikon is technically better, but its a letdown for the price... id just grab the Godox and save the cash.

I've had a lot of issues with flash reliability on the D850 lately. Unfortunately, most units aren't as good as expected for weddings. Watch out for these common headaches:

  • Inconsistent TTL that leads to blown-out shots.
  • Plastic hot shoe feet that wobble and lose connection mid-shoot.
  • Thermal shutdowns during fast bursts. Ngl, you might be better off finding an older used pro model instead of these over-hyped new releases.
