I'm honestly spiraling a bit looking at memory cards for my Nikon Z6 because the prices are just all over the place and I dont want to buy the wrong thing right before a big job. I have a wedding shoot in about ten days here in Seattle and I'm gonna be doing a lot of 4K footage so I need something that wont overheat or lag. I saw a lot of people saying the Sony G series XQD cards are the only way to go for reliability but then I read that the CFexpress Type B cards are faster and maybe even cheaper now? But then someone on a different thread said CFexpress cards get way too hot during long 4K takes on the Z6 and might actually shut the camera down which sounds like a total nightmare for a ceremony.

I'm looking for:

  • At least 128GB capacity (256GB would be better if it fits the budget)
  • Budget is around $150 to $200 max
  • Must be reliable for long continuous 4K recording
  • Needs to be compatible with my older XQD reader if possible but I guess I can buy a new one if I have to...

Im just so nervous about the card failing mid-vow or something. Is the ProGrade Digital Gold worth it or should I just stick to the expensive Sony XQD stuff to be safe? I really cant afford a card error during this event. Does anyone have a specific brand they've used for hours of 4K without it dying on them?

In my experience, weddings are too high-stakes for experiments. I've tried many cards over the years, but I always stick to the Sony Professional XQD G Series 120GB for my Z6. One time a newer CFexpress card got burning hot during a long ceremony and I almost lost everything. Honestly, XQD is just safer for those long 4K takes if you're worried about heat.

Yo!! Weddings are such a blast but I totally feel you on that pre-shoot panic! Nothing worse than worrying about a card dying while the couple is doing their thing! I've been shooting with the Z6 for years and honestly, the price-to-performance ratio on the newer cards is just incredible now! Wait, super quick question before you buy anything tho... are you shooting strictly internal or are you using an external monitor like an Atomos?? It really changes how hard that card has to work and how much heat it builds up during those long ceremonies! I'm super careful about reliability too, but if you're trying to stretch that $200 budget to get the most storage possible, here are my faves that havent let me down yet:

  • I totally feel that pressure but honestly you dont need to pay the premium for Sony just to get something reliable. I've tried many brands over the years and i've found that just going with Angelbird is the way to go if you're worried about budget. In my experience their cards are incredibly stable for long 4K stretches. I've used them for whole ceremonies on my Z6 without any heat issues or lag. Just grab any of the larger Angelbird CFexpress cards that fit your price range and you'll be set. They really are some of the best for video work and you wont have to worry about it failing mid-vow. Tbh I prefer them over XQD anyway because the offload speeds are just so much faster when you're tired after a long day of shooting. You'll have to get a new reader but it's totally worth it for the speed boost.
